Running SH4 on patch 1.4. All previous saves refused to run, had to start again.
After first mission out of Manila I returend to refit etc. Got my orders to sail to "Manila Bay" (!!) to check on enemy carrier's in the Bay. OK I thought, whilst I have been here Manila has fallen so I went back in to find these carriers.
Spotted a Mogami Heavy Cruiser leaving Manila Bay with no escort so I got it and carried on in, sneaking slowly, at persicope depth and spotted a couple of Zero's. Spotted a destroyer and crept around it and got to the base to find it occupied by American ships!
Then another zero zipped past!!

So, they never updated the base "scenery" with Japanses ships. Shocker...

Could it be those ships were captured??

"passing thermal layer" is announced every 10 seconds. I'm on the surface outside Manila Bay!!! Think I will remove patch 1.4; its bugged!
Been there...Done that...Got the "I am not impressed" T-shirt.
New Campaign...Based in Manila...1st mission...Date: 10 December, 1941.
Photo-recon two Japanese carriers IN Manila Harbor!
Yes, Sir! Right away, Sir! Just let me point my handy-dandy Kodak out the window here and I'll have it for you in a two shakes.
What's that Sir...Oh you want me to go onboard the submarine and do it. But, why? Sir. I can see them fine from out your window.
Oh, alright Sir. I'll go to my submarine and take the pictures.
No Sir. I won't just walk outside and take them. Yes sir. I am leaving for my submarine right now sir.
But before I leave sir. Just an observation sir. WE control Manila Bay and there are two Jap carriers parked out there in the Bay WE control, correct. Would it not be prudent to do something a wee bit more...Umm...aggressive about correcting this situation than say TAKING PICTURES!
It was this conversation that drove Captain Takao into a fit of mindless rage. So far around the bend was he, that he drove his S-Boat straight into an unmarked anti-submarine net in Manila Bay.
After the war Captain Takao reported that he had been in and out of many Japanese harbors, but the only anti-submarine net he "found" was in an American controlled home port.
Why does this remind me of the Bob Newhart comedy sketch Submarine Commander/The cruise of the USS Codfish.

My recomendation would be keep 1.4, ditch the stock campaign and use RSRD or Taters campaign layers. It's just better.

Keep it small and simple!:D
like Phil Therien(game designer Ubisoft) indicated a few days ago in an interview:
Phil Therien: I doubt we will ever go back to really hardcore only shooters. The market was too narrow for it to be a viable business choice. We would like to be able to please both sides but compromises have to be made. We have some ideas to improve on the situation though - keep in mind however that we want our games to be accessible to as many people as possible, otherwise we just couldn't keep making games.

Currently on 1.3 amd so far so good. I was in the Celebes Sea when Manila fell this time, so no apparent disruption to programming - yet!

RSRD is a complete rework of the campaign layers. It makes it less of a shooting gallery and provides you with historically accurate traffic, convoys, task force..etc.

Sound back on by itself.
Have you ever heard that saying "If looks could kill".
In USS Drum, through Makassah Straits and spotted 3 sampans. Decided to leave them alone, save ammo, and was looking at them through the bino's when ..... one sank!!
Another bug; was hiding from an ardent destroyer admirer when I noticed I was travelling THROUGH rocks on the sea bed!!

Good god, how many bugs are in this damn thing. Gato, lying in wait for oncoming convoy in Yellow Sea. No destroyer anywhere near me. Damn, got to go out, so save.
Came back loaded save "Heavy Damage Sir, Diesel engines destroyed, attack periscope destroyed, heavy flooding Sir!!!
What the hell? Do the japs have invisible los Angeles attack class subs!!!???? Am I sitting in a minefield? No I bloody am not!!!
If this doesn't iron itself out I will have to start again after about 25 hours play time!!

Sounds like someone hit a mine. I think I might have heard that somewhere before.;)
You may not be in a minefield or very close to another ship when you save, and then spawn in a minefield or underfoot when you reenter.
That sort of thing has been reported before. The easiest way around it is to save only when on the surface.
I can only speak from my experience, which has been relatively problem free even with multiple mods and frequent switching of mods.
Respectfully Submitted;

Thanks CDR, I was at 300 feet in USS Drum. Stationary. Destroyers were up top but nowhere near me. Lpcation was east of Yellow Sea, in the ocean, near chain of islands in very deep water.

Opps, sorry, wrong big bug. We caught this one in the galley nibbling on my fig newtons. Bloody bas$#^&*. We're going feed him torpex and shoot him at the next Jap DD we see.
Anywho, was crusing past Wake Island and sunk a destroyer with my last two torps and then get a message from the sound man that a merchant was approaching. An't that the luck. Headed in that direction for a little bit. Looked through the scope but was too far away to ID him. Got closer, thought Ill get him with the deck gun. Creeped up on him let him get about 1200 yards starboard and scoped him out again. Turns out to be and American medium freighter, headed straight for Wake. Not around, but right for the bay. Now here was a brave AI Merchant Captain I thought, going to single handedly take back Wake Isl.:arrgh!:
Ohhh, this is going to be rich, I guess he didn't get the memo. See, it pays to open all those DOD envelopes on you desk. He's probably wondering why his apartment dosen't have any electricity or water also.:88)
Sure enough, he gets about 2500-3000 yards from the opening in the bay and the shore batteries open up on him. Did I mention it was broad DAYLIGHT. Yep, he went up like a roman candle. :nope:
