I have posted this issue on the Ubi forum and I'm getting no joy there and I'm desperate to sort this stuttering issue with the U Boat missions add on, it's quite annoying you see ;)

Firstly some background.

When I played SH4 without the add on I was playing the game at 1280x1024 resolution with medium to high graphics settings activated within the game. Windows was running with max AA settings. With all this the game was running very smoothly with no issues of judder or stuttering.

After I loaded up the U Boat mission add on, and on my first look of the game I then noticed a regular stutter or pause when the game was played in the exterior positions. This pause or stutter is very short, less than half a second but is very regular. I am still experiencing this issue with the add on in vanilla mode and with TMO, plus TMO & German soundtrack, turned down the AA settings in Windows and turned down the grapphics options and I'm even running at 1024x768 resolution. Yet, I'm still experiencing this regular pause or stutter.

I'm quite baffled as to this problem and I would like any feedback from fellow players as to any similar problems or any ideas as to the issue I have

My PC spec, and I'm sure it's no dinosaur ;)

AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (with AMD dual core support in Windows)
ASUS A8N SLi Deluxe
ASUS EN7900GT/GTO 256Mb RAM (latest NVIDIA drivers)
2Gb Ram (paired matching 1Gb sticks)
Game played on primary slave HDD - Western Digital Raptor 74Gb (50% full)
Audigy 4 sound card

Thanks in advance :)

You certainly have the horsepower. I would suspect there is something else running which slows your machine down. The predicably regular intervals is a clue. However, many of us (even with very capable processors) get some stuttering with external views. When I get them though they are not clockwork-regular.

Thanks for the reply, and for the boost in confidence with my PC ;)

Especially the idea of something running in the background, I will investigate further

Kill any virus programs. Even as unintrusive as AVG is, it still causes stuttering, if I forget to turn it off.

Problem solved

I had a sneaky program running in the background that I was unaware of - I have now disabled it and the game runs very smoothly like it did wwhen I was running SH4. Must have been something else (SH4 unrelated) I installed at the same time I installed the U Boat missions add on. I'm now back to my maxed out resolution now and I have turned my graphics settings back up with no problems.

Thanks for the input

ATi stutter fix (http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/03/26/ati_releases_stuttering_fix_for_all_radeon_hd_card s/)

Also, start the game, and while in main menu, Alt-Tab and change the process priority to Above Normal from inside Task Manager. Then go back to the game and see if there are any improvements.

thanks, maerean_m:)

btw, did you notice the 'missing eyes' thread
in the mod forum? maybe there is a solution too?

My system is primarily business oriented but has the odd sim on it, somewhat less horsepower under the hood but runs with the add on just fine.

AMD 3200+
1 gb ddr2 dual channel
asus m2npv-vm using onboard sound, but o/b graphics disabled
2x hd, swap file on the slave, software installed on primary master
gforce 8500gt with 1 gb on the card

On initial install, had constant stutter in external view , approx every 15 seconds or so. Here is the settings that I have found very successful for me, and it does not look too bad either.

sound:
3d channels off
realistic sound travel time on

graphics:
1280 x 960 75 hz. trying to run these settings 1280 x 1024 brings the stutter back.
3d damage full up
character detail full up
particle density full up
terrain object density default -1
terrain object lod size default -2
3d ship wakes selected
ship normal maps selected
vertical sync selected

in the gforce control panel, set to run from global settings:
anisotropic and antialaising settings set to application controlled
texture filter to triliniear however
triple buffers off

this cured it for me, runs sweet and looks pretty good. if these run for me they should run fine for you.

one thing, i have a freeware little defrag utility I am fond of, defraggler (google for it if you want to try it). it can defrag a single file or a single folder as well as a complete drive and I run that once in a while on the ubisoft folder.

the only time i have momentary stutter issue now is coming into a harbour and I can live with that.

cheers.
