Installing it now. Funny, though. My Windows updater on my notebook didn't pick up the service pack. I had to manually google it and then grab the download file that way.

That happens sometimes. My wife leaves her automatic updates on and sometimes doesn't get the updates that I get manually going to Windows updates on "Patch Tuesdays" until a few days later. Purely an unsubstantiated theory, but I think they try to spread the updates around over time to avoid bandwidth problems.

There was an update that came out thru auto updates but I don't think it was the service pack. Here is what I've read:
For users who've chosen the automatic update option in Windows Update, SP1 will start downloading to PCs automatically beginning in mid-April, according to a Tuesday blog post by Windows Vista product manager Nick White. English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese are available now, with the additional 31 language versions due in mid-April.

I downloaded it last night and played 1.5 for a couple of hours. No crashes!
I'll give it a workout again tonight but things appear to be greatly improved as far as stability goes for me anyway...
You can get Vista SP1 from Windows Update. Just installed it earlier today.

Odd - I just ran my update and all I got was a security update and a new defender definition pack..... If anyone has the direct link to DL it - it would be appreciated. I haven't had a technet account in years ....
After scan disk fixing over 70k in file IDs im reluctant to boot to vista, i think ill try tomorrow though

For those that dont see it in windows update you may have to install the other updates that are on the list first. There are some prerequisits that need to be installed before going to SP1. Until you install them SP1 will not show up on the list of available updates. I had to run update 3 times before I got SP1 to show up and then the damn thing gives me error80073712 and wont install. :damn:
The suggested fix is to re-install vista. :damn: :damn: :damn:
Yet one more line on my "I HATE VISTA" list. :-?
Does Bill Gates live near water? I think I might drive my sub over to his house and put a couple fish in it. :arrgh!:

Appearently if some computers down't meet certain specs it blocks SP1 from loading. Something about a driver issue

Thanks CinC - turns out the reason I am not seeing it is documented. For anyone having the same issue - see the following:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343
I am using the onboard sound - AC 97 drivers.. .go figure.
Now here is the one bugger - their service pack hoses the driver? Why not just document that and have us reinstall the existing drivers - or is SP1 so different in the kernel that the old drivers wont work? Looks like I will be doing some digging.
Be carefull ! I am completely unable to boot into Vista at this point, even with scan disk having run.

After seing this thread I had a look at the auto update list and there was SP1 waiting to be installed. I manually told it to begin downloading and installing and have had no problems other than a required reboot.

I keep getting a failed installation. Error code 800B0100. I have tried manual and auto install and just can't get it to go. The microsoft page is really no help. I've had Vista for over a year now and have lived with the bugs and even defended it but I'm just about to the edge with it. I really hate to have to go backwards and buy XP but if this don't stop, I'm probably gonna do just that.

No go. Vista SP1 won't install on certain video or sound card configurations.

I've tried everything I can think of. Maybe some improvements will be released in a month or so but I suppose I'll be staying with the current system.:nope:

Did you try emailing Microsoft ( http://support.microsoft.com/ph/11732 ). You are entitled to free email support for updates - and that error message in google gives back a ton of hits, everything from hardware issues being the culprit, to corrupted downloads, so I'm sure it's not going to be new or unique to the MS support staff.
P.S. You can open a support ticket specific to your region at

Well, I got on the Windows Vista community support page and there are many folks having update errors. I get error code 80073712. Have tried the suggested fixes but so far, no go. Waiting for my new video card atm and when I get it Im going to do a clean install of Vista and see if that works to get SP1. I gotta tell ya, Vista has been nothing but trouble for me. Hopefully SP1, if I can get it installed, will fix my problems. They really need to not release beta versions to the public like this.

I have tried everything I can find on Google to no avail. I have a support ticket email to MS but I'm still waiting (I'm sure they are busy). Hopefully I can get it straightened out. As far as support emails, they're $59.00, my copy of vista is OEM.

The one i had on my wife's computer was 8004230C. That one was easily corrected. All i had to do was turn off System Restore. Once that was done, I have SP1 loaded on two machiines working with out a problem. Both, were downloaded from Windows Update

Ok,
Clean install of vista from disk
Turned off restore point
DL'd and installed all available updates from windows
No other software installed including device drivers that did not come from windows update
Vista SP1 successfully installed (before this I was getting a failed install error code 80073712)
Now, since Ive been getting the nvlddmkm display driver stopped responding error, this leads me to believe that something funking was going on that would not allow me to install SP1.
So this is one problem solved. Next is to see if I still get the display error.

I don't recommend updating to Vista SP1 unless it shows up in your windows update.
It didn't show up on mine until I went to Realtek's site and downloaded their very latest AC'97 HD Audio drivers. After that, it showed up, but disappeared again after I ran a game before updating to the service pack. I had to reinstall the latest driver and update right afterwards.
Onboard Audio drivers aren't the only issue with updating to SP1 right now, I believe there is a small amount of other various ones, too, that MS has blocked due to driver issues.
So find the very latest drivers for your sound and preferrably any other onboard drivers. Again, I don't recommend updating unless it shows up on Windows Update. There's a reason it's being blocked.
As a sidenote: I've noticed that even jacking around in Windows, SP1 has made a noticeable improvement in performance.

Well... I don't advise anyone else to try it - but I dl'd sp1 since it wouldnt show thru update... after much debate and more than a few what if's - I went ahead and slapped it on. While I was fully prepared to have to rebuild - the sp took with no issue - which really makes me wonder if MS has a handle on what it will and wont work with.. Now its off to see what it fixed and what it broke!
