Actually, it locks the Periscope on the target (What the L button does), I think the Poor indicates if the sub is properly aligned with the TDC solution (Not sure if it says it in manual aiming though)

I have found you shouldn't worry too much about that button.. I set up a mission where the victim.. errr target was not moving, perfect 90 AOB and I locked on the scope and fed the data into the TDC and it still said poor locked. I can't figure that damn thing out. It can go from good locked to poor in a matter of seconds with absolutely no change in any variables. I don't even pay attention to it anymore. I get set in my attack spot, lock my scope, program the TDC and when the AOB approaches 90 I fire away and I hit most of the time now. Before I would spend so much time worrying about getting that to say "good locked" I would miss my damn shot lol

The button locks the scope/TBT to the center of the target. Ergo, all information transmitted to the TDC will be relative to MOT. If accurate, every torpedo fired will hit dead center.

Lock-on depends primarily on your distance to the target. Weather conditions (e.g. fog moving in and out) and water washing over your scope can probably degrade the lock-on.

In auto mode, you can pick your impact point (of the target) by breaking lock and firing as your chosen spot passes the crosshairs. In manual mode ... it works much the same except you need to set up the TDC firing solution yourself.
