Ahoy, Cpt-Maxim here again.. the original Silent HunterII and Destroyer Command cable modem host from way way back in time.. finally upgraded past Silent Hunter 3, and now checking out Silent Hunter 4.. waited a year from release almost to the day to see how many fixes it would take to make it worth trying.. got it on sale to boot.. $19.95.
So, I found in the SH4 museum a little texture problem on the USS COLORADO...
Does anyone know if it's all black for a reason? Or if there is a missing texture? Or if a new reccomeneded texture mod is out that can fix it?
I have a teamspeak server running for over 8 years now.. with a few select players that have joined over the years, we make a pretty good gaming group supporting multiple kinds of sims. If you'd like to visit, feel free..

Look forward to your observations on SH4 compared to the good old days. I don't have a clue about the Colorado--I'll have to check that one out. I might just drop by on your teamspeak server and say hi!
Hope you enjoy SH3 and SH4! Make sure you apply at least patch 1.4. I really recommend SH4UBM as you can tell from my signature, but 1.4 is great. And if you have any questions about the game or any insights you'd like to share, that's what we're here for.
Great to meet an old timer Silent Hunter franchise player! SALUTE!

Ive already been playing for a while.. just took me some time to debug the whole thing,.. yep , Im certainly all patched up as I said above, waited til I saw the news about one patch leading to another, til they had four.. because I knew the status of each patch kept bringing more complaints than solutions. But as of now.. things are playable..
Im not interested in any mods until I finish a large portion of the game so that I can really criticize the original flavor of the game..
The mods I have all read about all seem great..
I take that back, I did install the old NBC radio 4gigs of audio.. I knew that wouldnt change much "actual functionality", but would be good for atmosphere..
I spent three days practicing 100% realism with only a few minutes in less than 100% with camera to get my bearings.. then I dove straight in on my career of 100% levels..
Not doing too bad, I'm currently studying alternating batteries with diesel for day night trans-pacific crossings.. been readin a lot..
Feel free to come on in anytime on teamspeak.

p.s. I noticed the COLORADO reflects in the water as a silver ship.. if you move the camera around (museum mode) but it took me a minute to absorb what I was seeing.. the reflection seemed correct, but the actual model didnt.. it was almost all black, except for the main turrrets, very strange.. other models all seemed ok.

I just thought I would throw up this image, to see if any other long term players have tried as many of these games as I have.. lol Old timers will get a blast of nostalgia from some of these..

Old-timers? Where's Silent Service? Epix Sub-Battle Simulator? Aces Of the Deep?
Nah, I never played a lot of those. The modern ones didn't interest me, and once I glommed onto something like Silent Hunter, I dismissed the rest as inferior. Still have several of the Great Battles series, though.
Wait a minute...is that PT Boats: Knights of the Sea I see down there? It hasn't even been released yet!:rotfl:

I played some of those Great Naval Battles series games by SSI. The North Atlantic battles in particular. There just haven't been enough games that give you command of a hulking battlewagon.:ping:

Yeah, I have the Silent Service somewhere, just couldnt get my hands on the image of the box cover conviently quick enough when I put this together..so I threw in the PT Boats, since it's on the horizon.. played Silent Service on my old Commodorre SX-64 purchased in 1985 pictured below.. had to attach external RGB monitor to avoid squinting at 5 inch color screen built in.. also played my first flight sims with 1 button joystick at same time.. 27 years experience in sim play so far.. hehe.

OMG I remember playing that game on my Atari Computer along with F15 Strike Eagle. Those graphics were fun.
I still remember getting sunk and seeing the water flood in the boat and filling up in the periscope view.
I still have that game around somewhere. It may have played in on my first IBM compatable computer but I don't think it worked on that Packard bell 386SX computer.
The first computer I got my hands on was my step daughters. It was an Atari 800. I later bought a Atari 130 or something like that. Heck I still have every computer I ever bought.
I spent many an hour playing the first silent service game.

Could someone take the time to go into the Museum and look at the USS Colorado?
Or suggest a new texture pack that you know for sure will replace / overwrite the black one?

My problem is solved.. I reinstalled the game, and now the museum shows the USS Colorado with proper textures..
Also, I have been playing ONLY on 100% realism.. I wouldnt want to learn it any other way.. and it's been fun trying out all the things I can think of to see what happens..
Had only one unexplainable crash to desktop (CTD) - dropped Secret Agent off at the beach.. moved my sub, and heard excrutiating grinding and metal bending sound effects and then I realized I was running over top of his little rubber liferaft.. rubber sounds like metal? But wait, there's more! So I leave and go out to sea, and save my game to play the next day without making it home.
Next day I reload the game, Im in the middle of the sea, and the message pops up "ready to release the secret agent liferaft" or something to that effect.. so I hit OK, and CTD.
I have enjoyed shooting down so many zero A6 planes I cant count right now.. but when a pair of jap bombers go over, I find them much more difficult to damage, and Im using twin 20mm's. Will we ever get better AA guns? hmm.. could be fun.. Im not afraid to fight incoming planes and just repair light damage most of the time..
Even though Im on 100% realism, I might save and reload from time to time in order to replay each contact. I consider this first full career a training run anyway.. and eventually I will play without using save and reload. I have had plenty of wounded medals, and medals of valor etc.. Need to find out where the exact running total tonnage reports can be found.
The one and only thing I can think of right now that would be nice, is getting rid of the big orange symbol following me around on the surface of the water which is visible in my scope and ruins the realism, but I dont want some large mod that changes many other things.. only this one thing.. any suggestions?

Be careful with planes. They get in one solid bomb hit and you are toast. I got hit with one bomb and it took out all my engines. Diesel and electric. I was crash diving and flooded critically at about 60 feet and died. It was a lucky hit.
They had video games in 1976? wow!

Do a google search for Computer and Videogame history:

I dont think I have been hit directly yet, although I've taken lots of damage, and been able to repair.. but maybe once.. and thats when save and reload helps ya learn... it's my temporary crutch while I try as many different situations as I can find.. testing the limits of what I can do in the game..
I think the pilots get a little jittery when I begin firing and it makes them go a bit off course when dropping the bombs ;)
