View Full Version : San Francisco Anyone?
Ok, seesing how my first campaign fell victim to a corrupted save file, i statred again. But just for laughs, adter completing my objective I set out for San Francisco after refueling at Rabaul.
Sank a ship to the south of Hawaii, arrived at the coast after a looooong cruise at ahead slow with 3/4 of a tank still left.
LOT of TARGETS there - sank 8 ships for over 50000 tons outside 'Frisco and had 4 torps and slightly under 3/4 of a tank left for the trip back to Rabaul. So, not only is it doable but the code has included targets well outside of the Indian Ocean for the more venturesome among us :arrgh!:

Did you try any of the other West Coast ports (if there are any)?

Shell the corner of Haight-Ashbury while you're there. Save the US a cultural headache in about 25 years. :p

Fire a few shots at Alcatraz while you're there.

I wonder if the Atlantic ports work too...

The pre-release photos of SH4 showed fleet boats sailing out of NY harbor. Just a matter of whether any ships spawn there or not.

That's what i meant...

Wasn't that a pre-render? :hmm:

Not sure about that. They also used it as a cut-scene when installing the game. I have never tried to create a mission with the boat starting in NY harbor, but you've peaked my curiousity.
Speaking of mission creation, are there any Carribbean ports to start a mission from? I was thinking of maybe making some what-if patrols from that area.

Just made the whole trip all the way to New York, the Harbor is there, but it's empty... :(

Gah, feck NY. Sail to Kiel like I did in SHIV. The U-Boat pens are still there.

I kinda lost hope after i found nothing in Alexandria (Even though if you look closely near Gibraltar on the map, you'll see a port with a placeholder name), the U-Boat pens may be there, but there's nothing in them

Yeh, but they are still there. :yep: Why would there be anything anyways, just a waste of CPU power to add stuff to the other side of the world. ;)

It's never a waste to add traffic to the Atlantic for us to sink!

There's no atlantic theatre in the game, no atlantic ports, no atlantic missions, so, why? :88)

Since the pens are there this means it's possible to design a historically accurate mission in a IXD from Indian Ocean to Germany. Traffic (AKA targets) can be put in.
I think its cool they actually added the liberty statue! :) Even cooler is the fact that Raptor1 could be bothered to go there! :D
You can always wish for more and I'm sure that some of us will live long enough to see a game covering the whole world, where you can use any ship/plane/vehicle and where you can walk around freely and spend one day in Rommels tank wars in north africa, another in a sub in the english channel and the next in the battle of stalingrad! :D Gawd! Sounds lovely doesn't it?

It only took me about 15 minutes to get from Penang to New York...on flank speed and x8k TC
Anyway, i don't think it should be that hard to add traffic to the Atlantic, so an Atlantic campaign might be possible

I suspect that UBoat missions will be further developed by Ubisoft to a SH5-Atlantic Campaign, and that the existence of the Atlantic ports is part of of the code that will eventually be incorporated into the SH5. If true, it is a pretty smart buisness move by Ubisoft, as gamers are helping to fund the development of SH5. It has the additional benefit of keeping the community interested in the Silent Hunter franchise by releasing updates. Now, if only they can create a Destroyer Commander module for SH5, I will be happy....

I think you're with the program. I don't believe there will be an SH4 though. I think we're on an eveolutionary program of gradual and affordable upgrades, each taking us to a slightly higher level. I like that much better than reinventing the wheel with SH5!
So I advise patience. If the plan is a success, everyone will eventually be very happy.

RR,
Are you privy to something here.....not that I disagree to this type of marketing strategy as it provides the end user a more frequent additions/content/fixes to their original software, thus increasing playability plus getting new folks to "buy" into SH4.
I see your point...makes sense...but is it theory...or have you been to a "meeting".
Don't get me wrong, whatever can make this series successful I am for....the more we expand the user base the more we will get from the Devs.
