View Full Version : Active/Passive Sonar and torpedo issue

I have a quick question to ask about sonar ranges etc... I was sitting in a juicy spot last night, I was 2000 yards off the port side of a convoy sitting at all stop at periscope depth, rigged for silent running(with my scope down). There was a minesweeper in the lead, 4 liners of various sizes/shapes and a subchaser pulling up the rear. I appeared to be sitting pretty and was waiting for the opportune angle to fire at the first liner in the convoy when suddenly, when the minesweeper got to my 0° bearing he turned hard to port, came at me like I was waving a flag or shooting off fireworks. I heard no "pings" from any active sonar searching, and there was no sound from my vessel for passive sonar to pick up. Did they happen to have an all seeing eye on board or something:hmm: ?? I am running version 1.4 with TM and RSRD.
Second issue I had was after using all torps and all reserves in one h3ll of a fight, I secured from silent running and noticed my trop crew was reloading non existatnt reserves. I have never encountered this before (mostly because I haven't ever used a full loadout of torpedoes in one outing (I know never return to base with torps right guys!!) Anyways, just wanted to toss those questions out and hope that someone maybe had an answer or two. Thanks so much all

How far away from the minesweeper were you, and what was the weather like? In TM, I have come to loathe minesweepers, as they seem to detect me all the time. I have to stay at least 1000 yards away or I'm in danger of being detected. I've had cases where they've heard me moving at 1.5 knots, seen a periscope even though the fog made it so we were outside visible range, just mysteriously seemed to know right where I was a drop a depth charge on the rear deck, etc. I lost my first TM career to a minesweeper, and had several other close calls. Aside from what seems to be a nearly psychic ability, perhaps you broached in bad weather and they spotted the top of the conning tower between swells.

Guess I should expand on my story a little. I was sitting 2000 yards of the port side of the sweeper, the weather was clear and it was dusk. I had been sitting at periscope depth, not moving at all for atleast 10 minutes lying in wait ( I had end-arounded them and set up my trap) There was no periscope up since my last peek when they were over 6000 yards away from me (bearing 55°) and then, like I said as soon as the sweeper hit the 0° bearing it was like he was shot out of a cannon right at me. I was honestly at a loss as to why he came and what to do, my shot was less than 15 seconds away but I couldn't very well stay at periscope depth and be DC'd.. grrr sometimes the AI in this game is annoying
Didn't minesweepers have special ways to detect things underwater in the war?
(like mines and logically u boats too...)
Anyway, Avoid the minesweepers ;) Sometimes its just the game, I had merchants spot me at 90 feet deep running silent and no scope out. No way he could have seen me but when I got to close he did anyway. Sometimes its hard to play games :P

I think that minesweepers use MAD (Magnetic Anomoly Detection), since that is the primary source for detecting mines and it was further developed for destroyers. I think I remember reading that the Japanese were the first to really refine and effectively implement MAD gear.
I've had single merchants spot my scope at over 3,000 yards at night with the boat stopped. They start to zig-zag, but I usually get at least one fish into them as they pass by. So, super-human abilities aren't only a minesweeper trait.

Thanks M. Sarsfield, I had never even though of other sensors or capabilities of specific units... I haven't had any merchant units do anything like you talked about yet, thank goodness. Well, guess I'll just try to back up a thousand yards or so from my last save and see if he can still pick me up or not.

did you serve navy bean soup for lunch?
Might want to check the men in the after torp room (vent the room before undogging the door)
Bean soup and silent running don't mix :know:
On the bridge of the Japanese minesweeper...
"Captain, sound reports whales blowing off our port side!"
Helm! Hard aport! Son, whales don't blow unless they are on the surface and besides it is just after lunch. Ready depth charges submarine detected!
Betcha thats what happened. ;)
