I'm on my 16th patrol, and my diesel reserves are down to 50%. For the last several weeks, U94 has prowled the sea's in search of prey to find only a measly 300 ton coal tender which was sunk purely for deck gun practice.

We've zigged and zagged for weeks, hearing the radio chatter reporting on the successess the other boats in the fleet have been having and getting quite disheartned. We've heard nothing on the hydrophone's either. Now, northwest of Lerwick, we were heading home.

Submerged at 30mtrs and creeping along at 2 knots, the crew was feeling downhearted. At 4:50am I was called from my bunk by the hydrophone operator who was reporting a string of contacts, heading straight for us. I listened myself and thought "such sounds could only be generated by a bloody large group of warships."

I used the external cam and lo-and behold i've got a task force bearing down towards me. With the HMS Prince of Wales battleship chugging along among them!!!!

I have had such a **** patrol so far. My boat's belly is stuffed to the brim with torpedos waiting to sink ships. This is the perfect oppertunity for me to sink my first battleship ever. These chances rarely come along, and the last time i nearly succeeded, the rough seas broached my conning tower and i was seen at the last minute!! :(

They're clipping along at quite a speed which will make an AOB calculation next to impossible. I think my only chance here is to get into position, pre-plot her course, and get a pre-set AOB and range, and wait for her to pass through that mark, then fire everything I have at her!!!!

What's the best reccomendations for torpedo shots on a battleship?? Individual shots fired quickly one after the other, or program a salvo??

Cheer's guys :)

Damn! Those moments are tense. Any info from radio reports? Any early task force reports that might be this guy? Battleships _usually_ travel > 20kts. So get perpendicular and set it for 20kts, then fire four shots with the first one in the center of her, the second at her bow, and the next two a bit ahead of her (like a couple degrees in case she's going 23 or 25). Unless she's doing like 16kts, you should get at least one hit. She is going 'fast' right, according to the SO? Also, while yer fish are in the water, do a quick 90 turn away from her and give her the stern tube. At the very least you should score one hit, maybe cripple her, and have a chance to reload and close her down once her escorts passes.

Let us know how it goes!

Well, first I'd save the game so you can do some testing after the battle.
What I mean is it's possible to sink these giant ships with 1 eel. Oh yes. But besides that try a TII under the keel just aft of her midship point.
To Luck!

I cannot believe how cruel and twisted fortune can be sometimes!!!!!!! I've saved the game, and now when i try to reload it, the game crashes out to desktop!!!! I've had this happen with previous patrols, and the only way to fix it, is to delete the patrol save, and start the patrol again i think.

Unless by some miricle I contineu to try and load the game and it works......FATE has cruelly and has really pissed me off by now screwing up my save game, and ROBBING me of the chance to sink this ship!!!!!!!! i am so pissed off right now, you wouldn't believe!!!!! :damn: :damn: :damn: :damn: :damn:

Nope, i've tried everything i can think of to retrieve this save, given the state the game was in when i saved it i really dont want to lose it :(

Nothing is working however, and unfortunatly my chance to sink this ship has been sunk by the game's inability to load the save!!!! :(

I dont know whats wrong, it could be a small instability that crops up with GWX2, i'm not sure.

I'll just have to see if i can find another battleship somewhere along my career!!!!. Strange, in the 3 years or so that i've had this game, this is only my SECOND encounter with a battleship. And once again fate spits in my face!!! :( lol

That's terrible! Sorry to read the news.

I suspect you saved submerged maybe to close to her. Bummer man. Maybe someone knows a few tricks but fortune has it's ways. Mark the date & grid perhaps you can somewhat find her again.

I know the feeling, although I'm a newbie. I had the Hood wander my way, but my boat was too damaged to dive deep, so I had to make a long-distance surface attack. I hit her, but she kept on going. With deep diving, I would've pressed right in and made darn sure that she was hit more than once! Stupid luck.:x

Savegame bug. Feel the pain. I'd rather pause it and let my computer run all day while i'm at work that deal with the load/save BS - especially if something important happens. Try the previous save. I find that corruption often happens in bulk, so you might have to go back two or three saves. If that's yer only save, then yea, it's blown. If you do have a previous save, at least you know when and where that TF will be right? Maybe you can do some real target data acquisition now. I figure that save crashes allow a bit of cheating this way:)

What a shame.

As far as attacking battleships, I fire two salvoes under the keel.

I periodically save, and yea it sometimes screws up the weather, but in a case like this if i had saved 6 game hours previous.. i can usually reload and find the task force again if something goes wrong.

The savegame bug has bit me enough (as did the dreaded ASW trawler CTD in Gibraltar the other day), that i now save frequently.

Tool.

That was my only save. The only choice now is to restart the patrol, and try and hang around the area's where I had recieved task force reports the previous patrol. What rotten luck!!!! Whenever i'm in position to sink a battleship, fate steps in and moved the goal posts!!! :(

These days I always create two save points before exiting the game.

Arg. What a burn. Unfortunately, I sort of doubt that the TF will be in the same spot if you restart the patrol. But it will be _somewhere_. The trick is to have a highly trained radio room so you get all the contact reports. Blindly stumbling into a TF is very unlikely, but if you know their rough course and speed it's easier to get in the way of a BB.

I feel for you, kaleun! Losing a shot at that BB from a stupid game bug is a miserable way to end a patrol.

Don't give up! It could be looked at in the game world as your electrics shorting out due to saltwater seepage.

Another thing to remember is to avoid saving your patrol while submerged. It's been documented for a long time now that particular bug is likely to corrupt your saved patrol.

I can confirm this. If you are saving your game anywhere near either A-a burning ship, with pretty explosions lots of graphics-hungry processing going on or B-a convoy or taskforce, it usually means that the savegame will fail. This is because the game engine (which is already slow when loading a mission or campaign) somehow cant load so much info when you start the save.

I run SH3+GWX+SH3 CMDR using athlon xp 1.67ghz, 1gb ddr266 ram, geforce fx 5500 agp, 128mb. I usually get 7-13 fps on highest graphic settings, which is playable for me. However, a mission or patrol takes 9?! minutes to load, starting from the main menu, and the whole thing from desktop takes 12?!!? minutes to load from desktop.

So I always save on the surface, without any ships in sight.

Ouch! I feel for your loss. Lesson to learn from this is never to save a game when you are submerged!:damn:
