Not a biggie I don't think really. I've never run out myself since installing TM (prior to that using stock fuel levels is a different matte) - I always tend to top off the tanks whenever I'm within 1000 miles or so of a tender just to be sure though. As long as you're not going on round the world cruises I doubt it's making that much of an impact really.

If a sub back then had been short of fuel on the homeward leg, a tanker or tender would have been dispatched to assist. You probably even could have knocked over a few diesel engine sampans for some spare juice. So in that light unlimited fuel isn't all that unrealistic.

You play with more realism than I do. In SH3 I'm still using external views and Weps assistance. Can't play SH4 still.

I don't think anybody really puts down anybody else for playing at lower levels, even very low ones; I at least usually only snap at the ones who brag about how good they are while playing the easy way.

LOL i wasnt looking for support! i'm simply just coming clean! :D and i really feel better now.

i figure i worry about fuel enough in my real life job, why stress about it at home when im relaxing :arrgh!:

and i also shall confess.....i use external views, but with a game this beautiful, how could you not? :)

Flames, cheater, liar, how can you step that low, you bastard. I fart in the general direction of your aunties.

You wiper of other peoples bottom.

Enough? Need More abuse?

How can you play that game with that one cheat on?

May all the Sands of the Sahara fill your belly button - twice. :)

Always play differently really, sometimes 75-100% realism, sometimes 0 :P

Depends on if i wanna have some quick fun or some hard playing hours ;)

I accidentally bottomed out my sub south of Saigon when diving to avoid aircraft and even though I only had 1% hull damage, I gradually ran out of fuel faster than I normally would. When I realized I was leaking fuel, it wasn't enough to get back to New Guinea. :( Bad end to a good career and not a realistic situation.

I would like to see a mod where another sub or a tender comes to your aid to help with repairs, spare some fuel, tow you home... anything but running out of gas.

I use unlimited fuel to shorten the time of the patrols. I hate waiting 5+ minutes to load a save file because I've been out to sea for two months and so much activity has been rendered. Also means I spend less time getting to the patrol area and dodging planes so I can get into action quicker.

I play at low realism level, just because I play this game for not too long now. I am happy that I can hit something. But I am working on my manual targeting skills with a self-made mission, sinking 4 different kinds of ships.
Getting even 1 hit on a well protected convoy is still hard for me.

I really don't like the limit of fuel. If I want action, I want that, without having the limit of fuel. So you are not really alone ;)

I like to play at the higher realism levels, but I also have to confess that I always select unlimited fuel.

To me it is bad enough to get across the pacific at flank speed and TC 2K+ I can't imagine doing that at 1/3 speed.

I never use the external view but I am addicted to my event view. To me there is nothing more exciting than watching my torpedo's progress and see that lovely rusty hull merge into view. ahhh

Specially if u just launched 6 torpedoes in a wide spread in the direction of a battleship :D Event view is great fun then along with the periscope hehe.

I enjoy high realism settings too, although I must admit that I've never sailed without external cameras available. With the stunning beauty of ROW, how could anyone restrict themselves? My hard drive is filled to the brim with screenshots, and there's no end in sight! :o SH4 just keeps getting more and more gorgeous!

Howler :arrgh!:

I might start sailing with unlimited fuel until/if they ever get this problem fixed.

I really enjoy the external view, as well. I likek the bird's eye view of watching the torpedoes hit their targets. You learn a lot about manual targeting this way, too.

Of an American sub in WWII who was helped by a tanker dispatched to them? Another submarine? (memory is emitting faint whisps of smoke on that one) Stole from sampans, enemy or friendly shipping? Please provide sources and all that legal mumbo jumbo that comes from making historical claims:know:. I just wonder how unrealistic the game is. The track record is pretty well in the devs' favor for similar situations.

Just the same, what's so bad about using unlimited fuel?

OK, donut, you bring the kerosene for this flamethrower?
No, all I could come up was this can of gas.
No problem, it'll burn, pour it in right here.
Yup, Yup!
All right, Mr. ATR, now you get yours!!!!!!!!!!:arrgh!:
Ignition!
KABOOM!!!!!!
oops..........

Using limited fuel doesn't bother me. That's what TC is for. But if the fuel consumption is really not historic, and really don't know one way or the other, then it should be adjusted accordingly. I've personally been trying to play to play at a higher realism. My biggest down fall is auto-targeting. I'm going to learn manual before I start a career. But I'll never be able to claim 100% since I really love watching the action!! Although I won't use the external views to purposely gain an advantage.

I was thinking of the few instances where some of our subs and a few allied sub got beached early in the war and other boats and/or ships came to the rescue to try to free the beached boats. In the end they were scuttled and the crews were rescued.

So, refueling and towing may be out of the question, but a rescue isn't too far fetched. It would be a large reknown penalty, depending on the circumstances.

1) I too can't recall reading of any actual cases in which submarines stole fuel from local diesel-powered craft, or were refueled or towed home by a tanker or tender. But memory fails me sometime, and I would love to see an actual account.

2) I also don't recall reading about any subs running out of fuel, ever. If they were leaking for some reason they either were attacked and sunk, or managed to make it to a friendly port for temporary repairs. I also like the 'teleport' function in SH3, simply because you couldn't steer with the engines and if your rudder was disabled you were stuck. Not realistic.

3) I'd like to welcome you all to this week's meeting of CHEATERS ANONYMOUS. My name is Steve, and I'm a cheater. I like to tell myself it's only a small one; external views is it; but it's still a cheat. I'm trying to clean my life up and play like a man, but those ships are soooooo pretty.

Major Johnson, I think that is an important distinction.

If you are using external views only to gloat at the suffering of your enemies I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

As for manual targeting, invest in the time to learn it. It is well worth it. Your enjoyment and sense of accomplishment will skyrocket the first time you manually target a ship and then use external view to gloat evilly (cackling and rubbing hands is permissible BTW).

But, I have to confess, I find manual targeting much harder in SH4 than it was in SH3. I don't know why. It may be just because I am more familiar with SH3. Or I may just be too dumb to get a handle on SH4 :88)

Good luck and good hunting to you.

Such true words, Ive used manual targeting since day one, I still find myself cheering out loud after a "long shot" manual targeting hit. Im usually thankful no one else is home with me at that particular time :)

I've got three things unchecked:

1. Fuel: the way I teleport around the globe, I need all the fuel I can get;
2. No Map Contacts: It's like a drug, I GOTS to HAVE it! Otherwise, I'm lost worse than Gilligan, and
3. External View: Yes, I've switched back to looking outside JUST TO watch the prettiness...Sometimes I call for unlimited periscope depth exercises, with a few crash dives and emergency surfaces, just to watch the sub in action...:D

This is definately good stuff Maynard!
