View Full Version : Can torpedo speed affect dud %??

Running 1.5 with the ROW and ROW Sounds mods. I'm just getting back into the game, so I'm running through the first stock mission "Hunting A Wounded Bear". En route to the Celebes Sea, I came across a lowly freighter, unescorted! I thought, what a nice way to get back into the game, an easy freighter plodding along at 5 knots. I wound up firing a full salvo!! Bow and stern tubes! A total of 8 fish!! At least 4 of them were duds, a few missed, possibly running too deep. But only one exploded. Thankfully that enough to sink the freighter.

Now I always like to set my torps to the high speed and contact settings. I'm wondering if a higher speed has a higher chance of being a dud, possibly because it bends the contact pin. Any thoughts on that??

And a side note. After 7 torps I was tempted to surface and use my deck gun, but I wasn't sure if the freighter was armed. I went into the recognition manual and it doesn't specify whether or not they were. Shouldn't the manual have that information?? I heard what I thought were explosions on the surface. I knew some of my torps were duds. Well I be notified if one explodes prematurely?? Or could those sounds I heard have been the freighter firing at my periscope??
Thanks!

Long story short for those that don't want to read that whole thread: the chance of a dud is reduced by 50% when using the low-speed setting on the Mark 14.
