View Full Version : Shadowing convoy

I'm shadowing this BIG convoy,16 or 18 ships...The seas are extremely high and I cant see well from the attack periscope even at a depth of 40'..Also when I do see them in the scope the thing amajig on the left of the screen wont tell me what kind or how close...So I'm waiting for the seas to calm or full dark so I can try a surface attack..Any comments?

Never mind, I misread the post.

Edit: keep going up until you can see?

What DT says and you won't get anything on the thingahmajig (TDC) till you get to within 7500 yards or so. Use your sonar to get a range estimate and a better feel for the course and speed, if you got the nomograph then its somewhat easy. Trust me the only class I ever got a D in school was trig and calculus(sp).

This is a great time to study up on WernerSobe's sonar only attack procedure (http://files.filefront.com/WernerSobe+Sonar+Only+Tutlwmv/;8914579;/fileinfo.html). You can actually use the fact that you can't see (and they can't see you) to your advantage! Save the game first so if you blow the attack you can go back and try it again. This is the time to learn something really fun and make new homes for millions of fishies!:arrgh!: Save that game though.

This situation is very rare and it's the perfect setup to learn the sonar only attack: the most fun you can have in Silent Hunter 4. Go get em!

That vid looks promising to me Rockin Robbins. I too was just wondering would you always need to be at peri. depth or surface to get enough of a fix on the enemy to attack.

Thanks

Triad

Sometimes weather is so bad Clayp, that you can not see an enemy vessel unless your within 300 metres :-?

Stick with it Clay! I was confused with it at first too...but when you get it, it IS satisfying- just as Rockin Robbins suggested. What helped me was to try Sobe's method and keep cross referencing the attack map solution.

GOOD LUCK!

No I havent yet..I was very close to them,I have the game set so it does the fireing solutions but it dosent seem to be working..:damn: It wont give me any ship types,no triangles and no distance to the ships.. I tried to surface and keep a low profile but the waves are towering over the boat... I'm still following them...How long does it take for the sea to calm down a bit?

And for those brave souls wanting to try sonar targeting, it depends on what mods you're using. If you're running the stock game it probably won't matter much. With Trigger Maru and Real Fleet Boat sonar has been severely hampered on the surface and you should be at periscope depth. In r/l sonar on the surface during a storm would be terrible anyway.

Let us know what happens Clayp, no matter what. If all you get out of it is a good story, that's a fine payoff!

I've had to cross whole latitudes to see a change, but that could just be me. :dead:

I tried again last night..No go!! Cant see anything thru either scope, raised the boat to 40' and the waves were still blocking it and cant get the boat on the surface..I know I was close enough a couple of times last night and the thingamajig wont give me any readings..I'm still following it..May try again tonight or wait until Monday...

Hey Clay, have you tried pressing the L key when your crosshairs are over the ship? Sometimes in rough seas you can do that and it will give you the info you desire but it will turn back off in a couple seconds until they get closer.

Well I'm giveing up for awhile...I got right up to them and I cant get any readings from the dohickey...I fired a couple of torps where I thought they should go and they missed..And the biggest thing that is makeing me mad is I cant get the dam boat to surface..It goes up and then sinks back down..... It looks like a couple of the merchant ships have sunk from the seas...

You should be lucky you can even see the ships. The worst case of weather pretty much made it impossible to see 10 feet in front of me, I ended up running into a carrier and sinking too :D.

You are frickin not going to belive this.....I LOST THE CONVOY!!!!! And then crashed my boat looking for it.....I have to be the worst player here...... My head is hanging.... I think I will take shore leave for awhile...

Keep your head up, Clay! You were in the worst possible conditions with (I'm assuming) no radar.

The next time you spot something it'll probably be an un-escorted passenger liner.

What year is it in your game and how much diesel do you have left? There's a sweet spot @ 4 N, 128 E. Assuming New Guinea isn't liberated yet.

No sir I'm on another mission now,had to start over after I lost the boat and crew..I'm going to have a heck of a time with this one..Have to sneak into a harbor and take pictures and I cant see outside while the boat is under water...:damn: I think this game is taking a slow trip to the shelf...:yep:

I haven't figured out quite yet if you're eff-ing with us or if you're truly having problems, kind sir. The periscope lets you see outside when you are under water, you usually have no problems with weather in a harbor. If you do not like the stock patrol assignments, load up RSRD and have at it....have good day!
