Hitting ships, esp flat tops in TFs, is still a crap shoot for me! I get the white X on or even behind the target, but the torp line is far away from the ship. I move it (using the spread torp dial) near the target, but I still miss. Someone wrote that you need to "lead the target" in a manner similar to hitting w/ a gun. Using a spread shot increases the chances of hitting. How do I get the torp green line on the target map to start off by being closer to the target? Is using the green line the easiest and most accurate way to ensure I hit a target? Playing w/ stock 1.4 and manual setting.

You're not supposed to try adjusting the torpedo line manually. The TDC calculates this for you automatically when you punch in the range, heading and speed of the target. The only time the torpedo line will point directly at the target is if the target is not changing bearing across your scope, for example if it is stopped, or heading straight at you or straight away from you. In these instances the torpedo line will point at the target.
If, say, you have lined up a target for a 90 degree broadside shot, the line should lead ahead of the target. The faster the target is going the further off the target the line will be. You will also notice in your periscope, that your periscope heading will be several degrees off compared to your displayed gyroangle.
Even the speed the torpedos run at (25, 30, 45 kts or whatever) is taken into account on the calculated gyroangle. In other words, if you select a slow speed torpedo the torpedo line will be leading the target more than a high speed torpedo, and you can see this on your attack map by changing the torpedo speed setting (where available).
The white X is the only thing that should be right on the target (or very close to it), and stay on the target over time, indicating a good solution.

The spread angle must be Zero unless you have successfuly attacked a ship in a convoy (with the angle set to Zero) and you want to attack a second ship that has a bearing difference of X degrees, in which case you set the angle to X.

Stadimeter range errors are almost always present and sometimes they don't make you miss. If a line from your submarine through the x would intersect the target, you have a hit if nothing changes while the torpedo is in transit. This allows you to decide whether you need to reset the TDC or you can shoot as-is.
