View Full Version : GeForce 7600GT 512mb 128bit Graphic Card
I have just updated my GeForce 5700 LE Graphic Card to a NVidia 7600GT 512mb Graphic Card, can anybody tell me the maximum power supply that would be needed to run this card.

Most sites recommend that for anything above a 5700 a minimum of 500 watts is recommended.
Thanks Panzer 49, this may just solve the problem i am having with my New Graphic Card when playing SH3 & SH4

I think it depends greatly upon the power requirements of your CPU.
I'm running the same video card with a core2 duo e4300 (clocked at 3ghz) with an antec smart power 2 (450w) and all is well. I learned long ago that the PS is not something to skimp on.

There are some myths regarding how much power you really need. Often you need much less than you think. :)

For AGP video cards that require being plugged into the power supply, it's not so much how many watts the PSU pumps out at it is how many amps it supplies on the +12V rail. A minimum of 24 amps is recommended, more if you have many devices connected that use the +12V power, like cooling fans, drive motors, etc.
Also, be careful about the wattage. Many PSUs that claim to be 500w, or whatever, are actually not. They're referring to the peak output that can be used only for short duration. Look for PSUs that list the max sustained output. That is what you should expect to have as a constant power level.

Nice tool JCB
Thanks for the quick response guy's much appreciated.
Further info below if anyone can help.
My System is as follows:-
Motherboard is an Asus A7N8X-E delux
AMD Sempron 3000+, MMX 3DNow, ~2.0GHz
1024mb Ram (upgrading to 2Gb)
DirectX 9C installed
GeForce 7600GT 512Mb
A 400watt power supply installed which I thought was sufficient to run this Graphic Card as it was working ok with my GeForce 5700LE
Have tried reinstalling both SH3 & SH4 but still having graphic problems.

Hmmm I have a GeForce 7300 GT 512 and it runs fine on my Antec PSU.
As a side note I did alot of research on PSU's and found that it's better to buy a quality (Stable) but lower watts 4 the $ PSU than a crappy higher watt PSU that isnt stable. Its estimated that 85% of all power supply's on the market are non stable garbage. I recomend Antec earth watts PSU's as they are efficient, Stable and affordable.
My specs
AMD sempron 2800+ MMX 3DNow, ~1.6 Ghz
Gigabyte GA-K8vm800m rev. 0
756 megs of ddr ram
Direct X 9c
EVGA GeForce 7300GT 512 DDR2
Antec earth watts PSU 350w

My GF 7600GT 256Mb needs a 350 wats power supply (in your Graphic card box, there's a paragraph specifying the recommended power supply).
For what it's worth, I have the same graphics card (7600GT 512MB AGP), and I installed a 400W PSU at the same time. It works fine.

I'm using a 7800GT with a 300 watt power supply.
Thanks Guys,
Have upgraded to a 520w power supply, still having problems with SH3/SH4 going
to a Black or Green screen and then the computer rebooting itself, have the latest nvidia driver installed 169.21.
When Playing other games i get white strips or the odd colours.
Can you let me know what driver you are using with your GeForce 7 series cards.

Hmm that sounds fishy, I use the same drivers. I would ask first what kind of power supply you purchased. Like I stated A good one isnt always a good one. I replaced 8 350 w PSU's at work that were 1 year old and all failed mostly taking out the entire Mainboard with them. Upon further research I found that alot of PSU's on the market are mislabled I.E. dont put out the power stated and are unstable with the 12v 5v and 3v rails fluctuating. Now in a normal PC that would be fine but a gaming pc needs that stability. I truly beleive that PSU's account for much more problems than they get credit for
2nd I would reload your drivers and try again.
3rd failing in that I would try returning your GPU for exchange as alot of CPU parts go through burn in failure which is failure 1st to 30th day is quit common.

Those problems you describe are classic symptoms of a weak power supply not getting enough juice to the vid card.
Time to RMA that paperweight and pay the 15% restocking fee.:damn:
The 7600 PCI-E version requires about 67 minimum watts to function properly.
I would not go with anything less than a 600w PSU or a quality 500w PSU with your setup.
You have to do your homework or you're going to get screwed.
Here's a link to a very informative forum to help you figure things out for your PSU:
http://www.hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=93
That link will take you straight to their section on power supplies.
I recommend that place to anyone that's upgrading or building a new system and needs some solid information to help them out.
Just make sure you use your own best judgement. Sometimes the people in these forums suffer from a certain snobbishness towards budget hardware. We're talking power gamers and overclocker freaks here.
For example, you will never read a good thing there that is said about ChiefMax power supplies. I bought one (550watt with 2 cooling fans) because money is always tight for me and it has performed beautifully so far for seven months under various loads. The 32 amp 12v rail gives me more than enough juice to run my Radeon x1650 Pro 512mb AGP vid card.
Hope this helps...and I also hope your vid card didn't get hosed by that weak PSU.
