I am using the TMaru Overhaul + RSRD + ROW mods.

I'm trying the first new SINGLE mission. Tokyo Run or something it's called. I have map updates on at this time to help me with my intercept plotting.

I receive the radio report of the escort and I promptly put down a Mark 1 & Mark 2 on the 2 ships and continue closing our distance. I plan to wait for the next report to come in - make some marks and then use ruler to get a general idea of their heading. They are obviously zig zag'ing.

Anyhow, eventually they get close enough where I can see their smoke stacks through the periscope but it is still long range. The question is, what do I do now?!

They are WAY WAY WAY far away that I can't make any sort of identification on the ship. I'm sitting at all stop in the water so my mapping is accurate.

The problem is as time goes by the next time I take a periscope reading the friggin lead destroyers are always steaming directly at me. So what exactly is the process after you see a convoy's smoke stacks at long range. How do you plot to intercept them and get in a good firing range?

Werner Sobe has a very helpful video tutorial on intercept and targeting. It's in the stickyed thread section. Something that works for me is getting one of the ship's speed and general heading. Surfacing and running at flank to get at an angle perpendicular ahead of the antcipated tack, submerging and working on your targeting as you let the ships come to you. You'll never get a successfull intercept if you try to catch up, you need to get ahead of them. The end around....

If they are very way you should do your tracking on the surface (especially if you have radar). I fyou stay far enough away you can see them but they can't see you, and you can move nice and fast. Once you have enough plots for a course estimate get ahead of them and dive, then wait for them to come to you.
