Don't know if anyone has tried this but has a global circumnavigation been carried out by anyone yet? Crazy idea but I don't know if it can be done.

There was a thread in the SH4 forums sometime back, where someone sailed their Gato class sub to European waters and poked it into a German sub pen to see how the other half lives. I believe the band and nurses were still there too. There's no reason circumnavigation couldn't be done. Especially if you click the unlimited fuel option.

Might have been me...
The band and nurses were not there, but the music/clapping was.
I say go for the circumnavigation and post the experience here

Now if someone manages to do this using RealNavMod then that would be quite a feat, othwerwise its just a test of patience and ramping the time compression to max, wheres the challenge in that?!?

Well, so far so good. Am just south of Hawaii above the equator, headed for the Panama canal. Refueled in Surabaya and Rabaul but I think that will be the last drop of fuel I'll see in a while.
If you ask nicely do you think the allies will let you through the canal?

They would let Balz through.

U cant go threw the panama canal, its blocked off by sub nets, trust me on this,i tried already.Im guessing that the designers of the game couldnt come up with a decsent way to do the 3 locks one would have to go threw. So dont waste your time, just go around Southe America
I've tried that out in SH2, years ago, after i got to most western point on the map my uboot dissapeared from it and as much as i can remember never appeared on the eastern side of the map.

The designers of the game didn't put any canals in at all. Kiel, Panama and Suez are all mods.

Yes,my mistake,i should have worded that different.
As for the nets on both sides im not sure,i know the Alantic side does cause i drifted into Colon which took about a half a day ,just to find two gun implacements on each side of the canal and a net..Not sure about the Panama City side but im guessing there is one ther too.If there isnt its gonna be a long trip for nothing cause u wont get over the one on the Alantic side, the canal is very shallow and them guns are very good, lol
Last night drew the real crap patrol area, GR 89. With the IXD2 its possible, just slow as hell and didn't catch a single tanker along the convoy route. Doing 7 knots was able to do the whole trip without refuelling, though was coasting back to Bordeaux on fumes. Total mileage was 61,000 and change, and took forever both irl and game time. Was fun to do just have the experience of doing it (the allies were nice enough to try and hunt me down with the "Task Force" when I was passing India but was overall a horrible patrol. Only 40k in tonnage, but ended up taking like almost 3 months! Ended up just deleting the patrol and getting a different patrol area.

Well I got as far as 65 k from the canal entrance before I was pounced upon by some DD's. Initially one Fletcher and 2 Ewarts. Took care of 2 of them but then a Buckley joined in the fun and was soon followed by a 4 stacker. Shallow water contributed to my demise as well as there was no place to hide.

Have sailed from Lorient down to Australia then east from New Zealand and re emerged in the Pacific on the left side of map and sailed round S America back to Lorient
With unlimited fuel of course and took forever to do
Twas in stock SH3 so bugger all in the Indian Ocean of any note then and no Panama canal either

Yeah, I remember doing that to....had to carry my boat across land and set sail again in the Caribbean http://imgcash6.imageshack.us/img524/5049/canaryheadsw0.gif
It is possible to do it without refulling in a IXD2, long as you stay at a steady 7-8 knots and don't wander too much chasing down merchants. If you manage to run into a tanker convoy coming from the Carribean you can always refuel in Penang if you want to complete the circumnavigation thing. Too bad you don't get anything out of it other than getting chewed out for being out on patrol for 6 months.
