Did you notice that the default Captain name when you start a U-boat campaign is Bernard?:rotfl:

Maybe I'm dumb - but whats the significance of this? I've been plaing the SH series since it first came out and this doesn't ring any bells.

Bernard is just the guy on you boat that messes things up for you and the others.

Since ComSubPac is our double-agent commander person, he gave Bernard command to screw up the campaign, ComSubPac is a double-double-agent...

Reading the Credits, I saw Comedians listed.
Which one came up with the
"HEY! Let's name the Captain Bernard Von Unfal!!"

Now,
I know what Bernard means, and I know what Von means.

But what is Unfal?

Bernard Of ?

I called my U-Boat captain "Otto Von Blotto" I kid you not.

Raptor1

Just looked through a German dictionary, looks like Unfal means Mischance/Misfortune/Accidant...:D

Soz...Bernard of Misfortune?

Alas, i cannot have more Captain-name related misfortune because my Fleet Boat skipper was and always will be named Philip F. Queeg

It is darn funny if you think about it. Looks like Bernard was transfered to the Pacific. It is Germany's only hope to win the Atlantic with Bernard out of the way. :rotfl:

Bernard is the German equivalent of Gilligan.

He is one of the more indispensable members of the crew, because he's the guy you blame for every stupid mistake you make.

It all started one sunny day in the SH3 boards, when a ferret named Dowly needed a name for his newly-founded Humorous Pictures thread:

One simple joke and a legend was born.

UBI has always paid attention. When people were complaining about the 'babysitter' Crew Management system in SH3, one player said what it really needs is a 'Watch Bill' automatic rotation system, since that's the way it works in real life; and look what turned up in SH4. They read these threads, and they pay attention to what the players want.:sunny:

LeeVanSpliff

Gotta love UBI for including a joke like that ... it won't mean a thing to most people but it'll put a smile on subsimmers faces.

I always want to name my German captains after Karl Heinrich, Graf von Altberg-Ehrenstein, Lieutenant-Commander in the Imperial German Navy from H.P. Lovecraft's submarine short story "The Temple". Unfortunately there aren't enough characters for that.

Short story can be found HERE (http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/thetemple.htm) if anyone is interested.

Strangley enough most were complaining that Bernard was on their boat and they got us back by making him the Captain :p

Now I know that Bernard was a 'stand in' for the american version of the same sort of thing... now what was that? Jonah? Murphy? cant remember.

Soo, can I get... say... 10% of what Ubi got off SHIV? I mean, being the daddy-o of B and all. :hmm:

As a side note, Bernard's 3rd birthday is just around the corner, 25th of September.

Bernard even made it onto the Bismark!
I was watching 'Sink the Bismark', and at about 20 minutes the German Admiral and Captain on Bismark are given a weather report, and the Admiral says "Thank you Bernard" to the reporting officer. Now we know the true reason the Bismark was sunk...

I like 'Private Snafu', but your comment makes it sound like there was a Bernard on the German side. there wasn't - he was invented just three short years ago.

Did the Germans actually have a cartoon character who was a regular screw-up?

Nope, the Germans didn't made anything like that. It would give a picture that Aryans actually screws up sometimes, but thats inpossible. No true aryan would make mistakes, or fail on anything.

Thats why

Bernard loads torpedoes backwards.
Bernard confuses meters with yards.
Bernard practices his drums when running silent.
Bernard thinks he can drink the water faster then the leak is letting it in.
Bernard thinks crush depth is another name for happy hour.

Bernard is my captain. Oh captain, my captain...

I doubt he does, but I certainly have a problem with somebody replying to a comment made six years ago by a member who hasn't even visited this forum in almost three years.
