My music tastes are considered to be rather strange by most people, especially for a 21-year-old.

Oddly, I listened to English-languaged or instrumental music almost exclusively until earlier this year, when I suddenly got to like a fairly popular rock band from my native Russia, which is now my second favorite :hmm:

Top (lucky?) 7 artists:

1. King Crimson [and related]
2. DDT
3. David Sylvian
4. Captain Beefheart [and his Magic Band]
5. Frank Zappa
6. Gentle Giant
7. Peter Gabriel

Go figure, eh.

David Grey
aint he the guy who wobbles his head loads when he sings? if so he's done some good stuf with a british duo called Orbital (electronic music) tracks- Illuminate and another whos name escapes me...

Back on topic in no particular order:

* Chet Baker (thanks to a SH3 radio download I had to get a cd of his stuff) - "Not for me" is a great song

* 4Hero

* Megadeath

* Iron Maiden

* Thin Lizzy

* The Petshop Boys ("Westend Girls" - classic from my youth)

* Gustav Holst - The Planets

* Basil Poledorius - Soundtrack to Conan The Barbarian

* ACDC

* Diana Krall Trio - All For You

* Steely Dan

* Led Zeppelin

* Photek

* Abba

* Eva Cassidy - beautiful voice from a woman who only 'made it' after she succumbed to cancer

* David Bowie

* Eric Roche

* Galliano

* Alison Goldfrap

* Herbie Hankock

* Jaco Pastorius/Weather Report

* Jamiroquai - Emergency on Planet Earth (another one from my early days)

* John Coltrane

* Lalo Shifrin - Theme to Bullit

* New Fast Automatic Daffodils

* Nuyorican Soul (check out "Black Gold of the Sun")

* Ozric Tentacles

* Santana (any of it, I have it all)

* Supertramp

* Tracy Chapman

* Jimi Hendrix

* Soul II Soul

* Miles Davis ("Some Kind of Blue" makes me shiver all over)

* Mairza (sp? portugese folk stylings)

* The Gypsy Kings (man can those guys play guitar or what?!)

* Orbital

* The Orb (Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld is my favourite album from them)

There's more, but that's about all I can remember at the moment (I'm at work, so my mp3 collection here is limited). Have just about all the albums/records released by the above names except for a couple (like the New Fast Automatic Daffodils- getting hold of their album "Body Exit Mind" is like finding gold dust- damn near impossible... seen it on amazon for £45.00 second hand :o but that's just too much!).
Last time I formatted my PC at home it took several days of ripping my collection back onto my second HD - mammoth task but worth it as winamp and my pc speakers are soooo much better than my old stereo hehe. :rock:

For anyone who's interested I paid for all of it- I daren't think how much I'd have to shell out to replace it all were I to loose it £££££££.

That makes 2 of us (36 also). I listen to old Metallica, old Slayer, Pantera, Mudvayne, Slipknot, among others. My Son and I started playing guitar together (he on guitar, myself on bass) a little over a year ago, and we've been playing Megadeth, Saliva, Slipknot, and Puddle of Mudd a lot lately.

I like a lot classic music, specially piano. My list of favourites is:

-Piano concert nº 1 Rachmaninov
-Piano Concert nº 1 Tchaikowsky
-Piano Concert nº 1 Schumann
-Nocturnes from Chopin
-Impromptus by Schubert
-Piano works by Beethoven
-Some works of Mozart (Nice but a bit too "soft" for my taste)
-Violin Concert Vivaldi

Of course Artur Rubisntein on the piano is a guarantee of the best result in any of those works :up:

And a lot of other works from the mentioned classics plus some more, like Cesar Frank, Davorak, Listz...

And music from the 80s, mainly disco and also U2, Dire Straits, ...

Hey folks, thought I might start this thread so's you can post about your favourite music, band, singer, and anything else, and perhaps convert some people to liking them too!

Me to start (an aquired taste, be forewarned :P)

Today (http://kraftwerk.technopop.com.br/images/images/2006/maxi/pic0005_2006.jpg)

Official Site: www.kraftwerk.com (http://www.kraftwerk.com)
Best Site: www.kraftwerk.technopop.com.br (http://www.kraftwerk.technopop.com.br)

I like Kraftwerk primarily because they're a breath of fresh air from all of today's sound-alikes. To this date, no-one has been able to reproduce the kind of sound Kraftwerk do, and they've been around for over 30 years. What does that tell you?

Their first major break in the US and UK markets was 'Autobahn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68C-r9kSLNE)'* in 1974, which lasted a mammoth 12 minutes (it was actually designed for long drives), but their only number one was with 'The Model' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR5HovyViaM)in 1978, as part of their famous 'Man Machine' album

Give them a listen, and try to appreciate true music pioneers, before someone comes in and says something about Nirvana being revolutionary :roll:

*And by the way, that isnt the original version, I couldnt find one without a crappy voiceover :(

Don't know about French punk but I have been listening to a lot of mid-nineties French Hip-Hop recently.

Dj Egan's playlist for the Subsim massive this week:

Afore mentioned French Hiphop stuff.

Dylan's soundtrack to Pat Garret and Billy the Kid.

Stravinsky - The Rites of Spring.

Both of the Gorrilaz albums

'I bet you look good on the dancefloor' by the Artic Monkeys. THE best song of the last two years even if they do shamelessly rip off a whole bunch of punk and hardcore bands I listened to back in the 80's.

And a pile of Pogues cd's as well.

I was going to go see them at new year (they play here every year at the Barralands.) but then I was going to go see Derrick May and then I just couldn't be bothered so I went to see my familly instead which worked out pretty well because my niece was born the day after I got up there. :up:

I have 2, Santana and The Style Council. I took the huff when TSC disbanded and haven't listened to Paul Weller since.
Santana have stood the test of time; I went to see them in the Royal Albert Hall 26 years ago ! They were in the UK 2005 at 2 venues, sadly didn't realise this until it was too late and tickets sold out immediately. Took a look on E-Bay and tickets where available for both [G-Max & Wembley] running at 150 and where they genuine ? Recommend Santana to everyone.

PS Also like Kraftwerk and like Steve, had the original 'Autobahn' also collected a few LP's .. Radioactivity, Exceller 8 etc. but haven't listened to them for a while.

PPS Simon & Garfunkel are magic too but could somebody tell me what caused the rift between Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel ?!

I have a fairly... developed music taste - both 'vertically' and 'horizontally'. On the 'vertical' scale (in terms of weirdness/complexity/inacessability), I'm known as a fan of progressive and avant-garde music of various sorts and times. Names like Captain Beefheart and King Crimson should suggest something to those in the know :p

On the other hand I have a huge 'horizontal' range, I really listen to a huge variety of stuff from folk music to Russian punk to acoustic jazz to alternative pop to progressive metal. I'm as likely to be listening to Mahavishnu Orchestra as to Rage Against the Machine; as likely to Vienna Teng as to Opeth.

Of the stuff I found lately, my most favorite album of 2006 - and probably the most impressive and unusual thing I've heard in a while - is a Russian album by ZHELANNAYA+MALERIA called 77RUS. It takes traditional Russian folk songs from the Tver' region, sung by the excellent female vocalist Inna Zhelannaya, and uses them in an amazing musical arrangement which combines everything between progressive rock, folk, electronic ambient, jazz and hard industrial grunge - at the same time maintaining a mood that's equally somber and edgy.
Here's a sample from it from the artist's official website, even :hmm:
http://www.inasound.ru/mp3/77rus/inasound-ne_bylo_vetru.mp3

Otherwise, I can be a shameless afficionado for any sort of music - as long as it shows signs of taste and intelligence. My catalogue of favorite artists has been steadily building, in a way that's accellerating in the past few months. I'm always annoyed by people who say something like "music today is trash, blahblahblah" - there's just so much good stuff out there, I personally can't find nearly enough time to listen to even a substantial fraction of it.

Bruce Springsteen

I think my favorite album of all time is Dark Side of the Moon. As a whole album goes, it just doesn't get much better then that!

My favorite band of all time would have to be The Doors. Just something about Morrison's intriguing lyrics mixed with John's killer drums, Ray's hypnotic keyboard, and Robby's bottle neck playin guitar! I have been playing their cds since I was extremely small. My dad was playing them even longer.

The Rolling Stones are my close 2nd favorite. I am sure I don't have to say much about them. They are true legends.

The rest I really like, but those three up there are my favorites.

Also like a bunch of other misc bands. If I am playing SHIII or flying IL2 I got my Glen Miller and Benny Goodman playing. :rock:

Something I recently tracked down and have been listening to quite a bit lately is the complete soundtrack for the game Star Trek: Klingon Academy, which is an original score penned and conducted by Israeli-born composer Inon Zur. It was performed using a full orchestra and chorus, making excellent use of both. The operatic style and gothic feel of the music fit the atmosphere of the game perfectly, and most of the tracks are good enough to stand on their own (though most are on the short side)

Di6(&David Tibet) - Jerusalem the black

How many miles
To Babyland?
Well, it's there
And back again!
Your bellied walls
Are clouding towards me
Look here and there
Look around!
I'll take you to Jerusalem
The black
And to Babylon the golden
The wet silvered stars
The gold mouthed
Wet speared sun
Beyond your heart
They guide you to
Jerusalem the black
And there to Babylon
The golden
Lovely kissed stoneworks
Blessed by many hands
And lips
All in the silence
Were dragged on knees
To Jerusalem the sleeping
And to Babylon the great
Babylon awake
And laughing
Jerusalem asleep
And smiling
Someone I know
He holds a gun
And shoots with his heart in
Jesus
Someone I know
Looks in your heart
Surrounded by
Ferocious angels

Death in June - "Flieger"

Above the stars
And, above the moon
We initiate
We will be there soon
Above the stars
And, above the moon
We initiate
We will be there soon
Flieger, flieger
Flieger, flieger
Screamers come and screamers go
Little scythes cut the air
As above so below
Screamers come and screamers go
Little scythes cut the air
As above so below
Flieger, flieger
Flieger, flieger
Cruising altitude
Here we come
Scoring from behind
Out of the black sun
Cruising out of tune
Here we come
Shooting from behind
Into the black sun
Flieger, flieger
Flieger, flieger
Hearts we never feel
Like calming down
We're high above
Our hallowed ground
Hearts we never feel
Like calming down
We're high above
Our hallowed ground
Flieger, flieger
For pilots
Nothing is forbidden

Just to get the perspective:
East-German punk gothic-industrial dance floor hit 'Haus Arafna' (just the fans - the band is somwhere from West-Germany, Switz or Austria - I have forgotten - and articullat quite intelligent in interviews (they are NOT nazi!!! - but here are others...)- nothing what disturbs a real teen fan) (yeah:rock: I was some of them too - But everone grows..for better or worse...)

-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38QsjPmosf8
(enjoy the music...)

'Haus Arafna' actually was some clinic for born chronic psychological disabled in Berlin, where the fist systematic killing for 'cleaning the popoulce for the better of the (totalitarian) state' from the Nazi-Regime occurred...but the ideas came actually from america (USA). That's the background of thinking of this band as far as I have understand...and bothered to follow at the time...

My favourite band of all time was Fugazi until I interviewed Ian Mackaye a few years ago and I discovered the meaning of the proverb 'Never meet your heroes.'

Quite aside from the fact that I'm going through a heavy Madness kick just now my favourite music remains swing, particulary Count Basie but with a nod to the Reinhart / Grappeli axis too. Also mental for decent 'Classical' music (I hate that term but am too lazy to think of anything better.)

Aside from anything involving Steve Albini I had pretty much stopped listening to anything that could be called rock music (not that was ever really much of a fan of rock,) until a friend made me listen to the Artic Monkeys who I believe may quite possibly be the saviours of mankind. 'I bet you look good on the dance floor' is one of the very greatest rock tunes I have ever, ever heard. It makes me dance like Snoopy. Gorrilaz are pretty good too. perhaps there is a simian thing going on.

Of course it is. Especially, because one part of it contains our "anthem" (although we aren't supposed to call it an anthem nowadays, it's been cut from the Lisbone treaty).

What I wanted to ask, is there anyone who listens only, better said primarily, to classical music. None of this modern amoral screaming (for the most part).

Other pieces of classical music that are a must hear are:
Bach: Brandenburg concertos
Beethoven's Fifth (yes it's famous, but it's also very, very good)
Tchaikovsky: First Piano concert, 1812 overture (yes, I know, I'm only listing the "world" famous works, but they do hold some special values, atleast for me)
Mozart: Requiem and a dozen other excellent works
Berlioz: La symphonie Fantastique
Brahms's First
Sibelius (I only know Finlandia, maybe Dowly can explain it in further detail if he sees this post)
Tartini's Devil Sonata

This are only the top of my list, which is long. Since one lives only on immortal works, he has, in a way less to chose from than other people, but it does make one's work immortal aswell.

I don't like the screeching and howling and just plain noise of contemporary popular music.

So I listen to classics, some of my favorites are the late 19th and early 20th century Russian composers.

I should've mentioned my dad but I'm being modest :oops:

I grew up in the family of a professional musician, that's pretty much the only thing he's been doing for a living while I've been around. He's a classically-trained acoustic guitarist, but plays all sorts of stuff. So via him, I've got a massive fill of everything from classical and flamenco to blues and rock to his own avant-garde sort of stuff.

We've had a couple of musicians in our family, but the seriousness didnt really extend past it being a hobby. My father plays and sings famous country music, and has made some good money in pubs around the area, my sister used to play piano, and I'm teaching myself keyboards and experimenting with sounds.

However, I'd love to downsize my current keyboard. A nice desktop MIDI controller would be lovely.

I like classical music as well as some modern pieces.

just to name few:
Rammstein,
Nightwish,
Max Raabe (for a party his not so quite serious interpretations are just great ) ,
Tim Fischer
some older American and French tunes,
I like some old jazz to so some tunes in GWX are quite much to my taste.

However, above any and all I prefer the early Baroque music, with pieces composed by such artists like Arcangelo Corelli, Manfredini, Torelli, or Abel.
Quite recently, I `ve found an absolutely stunnig music of one composer forgotten for a very long time: Henrico Albicastro, or, if you like his original name, Jochann von Weissenburg. His Concerti a Quattro Op7 are just most damn impressive piece of classical music I`ve heard for a long time. They are absolutely surprising.
Besides, I like captain Tobias Hume`s Musikall Humours and some songs by John Dowland. Additionally, I`m still discovering the French schold of viola da gamba, represented by Marin Marais, Monsieur de Sainte Colombe, Francois Couperin et consortes.
