Just had a couple concerns about finding how deep of water one is in.If these have already been asked or kinda noobish i apolagize.

1.When pinging for depth say near a escorted convoy or any enemy ship for that matter. Can they hear a sub pinging for depth?I usually do this a few times before approching a engagement but sometimes i get a suprize and have to do it at a close distance. And if the enemy can hear a ping, how far away can they hear it from?

2.Is there any mod for a map with water depths on it.Like a regular nautical map? This would be nice so one knows what kinda water they have under them .I know u can kinda get a idea on the shade of blues on the map already but i like to have a more exact number when trying to escape from enemy attack runs bearing down on me.Most of the time im in open water so its not a real issue but at times ill run pretty close to coast lines on the way home if i have any eels left, and waters can get a little shallow at times fast.

Thnx for any replys, this forum is absolutely amazeing.I have played online games for at least 7 years now, everything from flight sims to first person shooters to World of Warcraft and have never found a forum thats so active and so full of excellent knowledge of a game. The following that this game has is awesome,a big Salute to all.keep up the great work.

I know this one!!

1. The ships cannot hear depth pings - unrealistic I know but apparently its hard coded into the game

2. No, I'm afraid there isn't. There was another thread on this not too long ago, and if you want accurate depths apparently you can go into the mission editor

SH2 used to have a feature where you could click anywhere on the map and get the exact depth. However, I think the map as is, gives you pretty good information. Most real U-Boat kaleuns had to do with far less in terms of accurate depth maps. Especially in some of the more distant patrol areas away from European waters. Keeping a player uncertain gives a good 'fog of war' element to the game.

Thnx for the very fast replys guys.If the enemy cant hear the ping then a map doesnt matter. As long as i know they cant hear me then ill ping my heart out to know my depths.I am real surpized that they cant hear our pings though,i would have thought that the developers would have done different on this for a more realistic game.Thats kinda a bummer knowing this.Anyways, thnx again for the fast replys

You can ping but not pong. :smug:

Taz

take regular depth soundings
also, on the nav map

light blue = shallow

dark blue = deep

darker blue = reeeeeally deep.

In OLC's GUI on the F5-map is a dragable "stencil" comparing the colors of the map with depth. Though it is very much assumption and not that accurate it gives a very good image in what range the depth is where you put that tool.

There are (if my memory doesn't fool me) 5 different shades on the map going from very bright to dark blue
