My guy over at GameStop is working on me to get the new 120 gig PS3.
Thier both a big investment even for me for a toy. I want to make the right choice and Billy Gates has enough Money.:p

PS3? ...are they still sellin those? :rotfl:
Seriously though, what's the GameStop guy backing up that argument with? I'm still mildly irritated with Sony and the lack of decent PSP games. Basically I've found about 4 decent PSP games and other than that it's just a neat little handheld web browser. Makes me less apt to want to get into the PS3 I guess.
On the one hand you got MS and you're right, we hate to give Bill more money. On the other hand we got Sony and all their proprietary crap (blu ray, mem stick, mem stick 2, etc...) I just wish they'd stop it.
I'd basically be buying the X360 to play one game. My kids got a Wii though... I might try it out on that system first. Actually, might be cooler to swing a light saber with a Wii controller. :hmm:

Buy yourself a 40GB model (cheap at the moment) and then just get a new HDD. Do not pay extra for the privilege for the pre-installed extra space.
I originally bought a 60GB and now have 250GB installed. It's really easy too, open flap, undo 1x screw, insert new HDD & start system. Done.:smug:

Just curious, which game is out on July 29?
Personally im waiting for GTA IV (April29 in UK)
+From my experience its best to avoid PS3s im now on my 4th machine (darn blu-ray drives break really easilly) whereas i still have my 360 launch system, fingers crossed it has no faults so far:up:

ahwel, Xbox 360 won the battle. there is just so much more choice with the 360. I dont care it the ps3 has a blue ray drive. its harder to put on to those discs and thats why many games had a low frame rate. screw sony.

How do you like the fan noise coming form a PS3? I think its kind of annoying for a console to make noise.

PS. Most of those games make it to the PC anyway. This makes the Wii more attractive. The types of games and the cool controls is kind of enticing!

:rotfl:My PS3 is nearly silent, in fact the disc spinning up is louder than the fan. Either way, it's better than the 'ring of death' due to overheating.:p Incidently, the 360's have fans too, don't they?
@ Herr_Pete

:rotfl:Shows what you know. It's no harder 'putting stuff' on a Blu-Ray than it is for a HD DVD, DVD or CD. What is harder is the coding, which dev teams are actually getting to grips with right now. How's this, GTA4 on the PS3 will contain the full game+additions @ fixed 60fps, where as the X360 version will only be able to run the game with part of the content stored on the HDD without additions. What annoys me is the attitude towards the caliber of games on the PS3 based on reviews of sh1tty ports from the likes of EA & Ubisoft who, by their own admission can't be bothered to properly learn the coding for the PS3.
@ Flakmonkey
That's sad to hear. I think a bad batch went out. I'm still using my launch day 60GB and have (touch wood) never had any issues with it.

PS3 looks OK, but in the end, its Sony! I don't know of a single person that likes that company anymore. If I bought a higher powered console (which I probably won't), I'd have to support the Xbox-360. Besides, if I got a ring of death, I can just drive on over to Redmond and through it on their doorstep! :D

True, True... the stuff does usually make it to the PC.
I got a Wii for my kids... so I think I'll try it out there first. Probably a lot more fun to swing a light saber with a Wii controller anyway.
What I dislike about games on the PC (in general) are:
1) I never seem to have that perfect mix of hardware to run the things flat out
2) Configuring for optimal performance is such a time consuming pain... and I usually seem to break 5 other things that were working fine in the process.
3) PC games don't seem to work out of the box! There seems to be this expectation nowadays that you must D/L patches before the thing will run.
What I dislike about console games:
1) Nobody is making games for Sim/RTS fans (with the possible exception of car racing games). I want SH3 and Falcon on the x360.
2) Limited FCS, keyboard, and mouse support for games.
3) Limited support for modders.
What's interesting is that I see the negatives related to PC gaming continuing to get worse while the negatives associated with console gaming will probably diminish. As the cost of next-gen consoles climb into the $300+ range I don't see them continuing to be viewed as playthings for children... I think that perception has already begun to shift. Now we just need the games to catchup a bit in sophistication. I'd be content to never play a game on the PC again... it's just that console game devs aren't making the kind of games I like.

Not only that but there's also Folding@Home - http://folding.stanford.edu/, which, if you check out the active processors and processing power, the PS3 is leading @ 913 TFLOPS.

Um, I do.:D They made it possible to have a PS3.:p
Yep, If I owned a 360 and it croaked as quickly as some have, I would love to have the opportunity to return it in person.;)
Presently, PS3 appears to be lagging behind the x360 in popularity; could just be my misguided perception though. Although the recent house-cleaning at Sony sorta confirmed that suspicion for me. I think Sony really shot themselves in the foot with their release date lag more than anything. You can't just give your competition a full year headstart and expect it to not have any consequences.
I have read that the PS3 appears to have more horsepower. Yet there does not seem to be many (if any) games that take advantage of this processing/graphics edge. Are there any PS3 exclusives out there that should sway my opinion?
I'm getting ready to install Vista 64 on my main home PC and I've skimmed a few articles here and there mentioning some sort of Vista media management software/system that allows the x360 to display video from the PC.
I kinda like the idea of setting up a slingbox (or something like that) to allow my PC to record TV (like Tivo) and storing that to a huge network storage drive to recall later with the x360. But I dunno, the PS3 might have the same features... I'm just thinking maybe if MS developed Vista and the xBox, they might play nicer together?

Recently, I would say it's your imagination (http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/006491.html), though I suspect anyone who really wanted one already had them. As far as shooting themselves in the foot, a little, but I don't think the difference in releases dates has hurt Sony as much as one might expect.

I'm not aware of any that really pushes the hardware like they can, nor any must have exclusive, however, PALs will be getting a tivo for their PS3 (http://playstation.about.com/od/hardwareandaccessories/a/PlayTVPS3.htm) unlike poor americans who have those lovely Assrape-Associations of America to crusade against the free peo- protect copyright laws under a court of jus- law.
I'd be interested in a 360, IF THEY ADDED BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY. That's why I have a PS3, and the fact that sony killed that feature makes me want to... to.... draw a cartoon! Of Muhammad! And name Sony as the author!

worldwide its outselling the 360.
subman1 - the ps3 is quiter then the 360, mine is dead silent makes less noise then a single 80mm cooling fan in my PC.
herr_pete - the bluray drive actually has a more constant and slightly faster average read rate then the 360's dvd drive not that that has anything to do with framerates anyway.
also bluray isnt a sony only propriety its controlled by over 20 companies and sony isnt the biggest of them.

Don't worry FIREWALL, it is very confusing.:yep: It's not helped by the many different types of PS3 available.
I would suggest that, if you can, find a 60gb PS3 that supports backwards compatibility. Of course thats only an issue if you wish to keep playing PS1/PS2 games.
I favour the PS3 over the 360 purely because you get everything in the one package and that package is very easy to use. While the 360 limits you to specially designed MS hardware addons, the PS3 is plug and play on all devices, just like a PC, so you can use a USB HDD from your PC as additional storage, use your USB or wireless Keyboard/Mouse or hook your digicam directly to it. The PS3 recognises everything plugged into it. It makes life a lot easier.
One of my personal favorite features of the PS3 is the Remote Play/Remote Start feature. This means that wherever I am in the world, as long as I have WIFI access, I can switch on my PS3 via my PSP and use any/all content stored in the PS3, games, movies & music alike. Also, as my PS3 is hardwired to my PC, vie router, I can also stream any additional content from my PC over the same remote WIFI connection.:rock:When I'm done, I can remotely switch the PS3 off again.
As to the 'horsepower' of the PS3. It's true that no-one as even come close to tapping the processing power of the PS3. Currently the most demanding game available for the PS3 is Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and this game only used 30% of the available processing power. I think we'll soon see the devs really begin tapping the available power, with titles such as Haze, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5 & MGS4 (all exclusive to the PS3). From now to the end of 2008 is the time the titles on the PS3 will really make the console shine.
TIVO for the PS3: There is (available soon) a device called PlayTV which connects directly to your PS3 which will enable you to view & save free-to-air digital channels directly to your PS3 with no DRM limitations. I'll admit that this service might be a little limited within the US, however, here in the UK, we get around 50+ free digital channels, these and more will be available to us.
If the Wii interaction/motion is your thing. The PS3 also supports this type of interaction through the Sixaxis controller & PSEye. While these titles/content are still in their infancy, there are some awesome titles already available, such as High Velocity Bowling, I can tell you this is great fun, and Eye of Judgment, which is an innovative interactive digital card game.
All this aside, I'll concede that console preference is always down to the individual. Just happens that I'm a Playstation man.
My advise to anyone who want's more info is to check out - http://www.ps3forums.com/ - I'll give you fair warning, it's not Subsim. People over there are quite petulant at times & rude. Also, due to the console nature of the members, the English language seems to be left at the login.:rotfl: However, it is the most active PS3 forum around with many detailed reviews and hardware explanations. As well as a lot of bitching.
Either way, I'll answer any questions people may have.
Sounds to me like...
If you decide to go with a PS3, buy the cheapest model (aka. smallest HD) and then swap out the HD later if necessary. Are there other features to be aware of between PS3 versions?
Have to admit, I like what I'm hearing about the PS3 plug-n-play compatibility.

Yes, there are other differences between the models, based on the UK models:
IIRC the US has/had 20gb, 40gb, 60gb, 80gb. However, I'm not sure about the features of each except the ones I list below. Also, in the US, is don't know which are currently on sale.
60gb model's features:
-60gb hard drive
- Backward compatibility with Ps2 & Ps1 (hardware or emulaton BC)
- 4 usb ports
- memory card slots (x5)
- 90nm cell chip
- Plays SACD's
Latest 40gb model's features:
-40gb hard drive
- Backward compatibilty with PS1 only (now discontinued on latest batch)
- 2 usb ports
- No memory card slots.
- 65nm cell chip - helps to run cooler and quieter (RUMOR UNCONFIRMED)
There is also a 20gb model (US only I think) which has no HDMI output or WIFI.
Personally, for the intended full fuctionality of the PS3, the 60GB is the only model to go with. Try the stores, ebay/amazon etc, these are still stocked regardless of the latest Sony statments. Just double check with the vendor of the features list.
FYI, the PS3's file storage system uses FAT32 on external drives, so you are limited to a (approx) 4gb max file size. However, with streaming and virtual/real media servers, it's not a problem.;)
EDIT - If your intent is to upgrade the HDD, my 250gb 2.5in SATA 5400 HDD cost me £62.99. Bargin. However, you will be able to get cheaper now.
EDIT EDIT - How could I forget....The PS3 Online Service (aka PSN) is 100% free, so no annual charges.
EDIT EDIT EDIT - Disclaimer time - For christ's sake do not decide to buy a PS3 (or any console for that matter) due to what I have put in this post, I standby what I say but the choice is yours. Get yourself out to the stores and play test one, just make sure your testing a PS3 exclusive game and not a crappy port, failing that try friends/family if they already own one. My brother & sister all owned a 360 until they tried my PS3. ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing what PS3 games are going to be like in a few years time. For example, look at say... Red Faction (http://nirvana.sk/storm/herni_denik/08-18-2006_r/red_faction.jpg) on the PS2, then look at BLACK (http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2005/305/920901_20051101_screen001.jpg), see how much the gfx have improved? Uncharted's graphics are awesome, so what the hell are they gonna be like in 4 years??? You can probably tell I don't like 360s. MS don't seem to care that they are so unreliable. You'd have thought that after being released for over a year, they'd have been fixed.

Well good news on that front. I got a call today from the hardware store I was in last summer (the warehouse job) and they asked if I'd want to go there this spring and work till late fall. Gonna go sign the contract on Thursday. So, mid-summer, I should have plenty of money to buy me a PS3.
Have to say... My opinion has been swayed more in the favor of a PS3.
For some reason though, the styling of the thing reminds me of Spiderman 3.
In which case, everytime I look at it, I get this image in my head of Tobey Maguire whining and crying. Perhaps this is the real reason why the PS3 sales are lagging?
If there's ever a 4th movie; might as well just start Peter Parker off crying in a skirt.

I don't understand all the hate to the 360. I've had mine for the past 2 years now, and it's never overheated. The only problem I've had was my fault; I dropped it once carrying it through the hose and it had to be repaired. Anyway, it's a great system. I'm not going out to spend $500 only to play final fantasy and Metal Gear. It's pointless. Every game that was supposed to 'rock' the ps3 turned out sucking, according to the reviews. All of the games that got good reviews on ps3 are cross-platform games and are getting better reviews on X360.
However, in the previous generation consoles. I was a PS2 lackey all the way, battling the evil that was the Xbox 1. However that was the days of SOCOM, FX10, MGS 2/3....those were good days. Back when consoles only cost you $250 rather than double that....

Which games specifically? Examples please because so far every game that has been designed on & for the PS3 have not been anything other than brilliant.

Oh LOL, reviewers. Which reviews/reviewers exactly? Tell me which ones and I tell you which ones MS have shares in or own. Ask yourself, if it was a level playing field when it came to reviews, why then do all the sites predominantly advertise 360 games?;)
Tell me which ones and I tell you which ones MS have shares in or own.

When I get around to replacing my PS2, it will be with a PS3, for sure. MS shot themselves in the foot by backing HD DVD, the PS3 has Blu Ray built in. Plus I always liked the games that were Sony-only.

PS3 always seems to get the short straw when it comes to cross platform stuff though, just look at what a mess EA made of the Orange box on ps3 and stuff like Assassins creed/Turok which struggle on ps3.
Blu-ray may be ps3s biggest asset but its also its biggest problem, a lot of new games on ps3 have to be installed (DMC4+GTA4 when it comes out) to the HDD since the read speed on bluray is just too slow to stream data to the system without stuttering (its about half that of standard dvd).
To avoid a lengthy install process many studios simply dial down the texture/environmental details for ps3 versions so they can be streamed from the disc which completely negates the point of having all that disc space and generally leaves ps3 owners feeling a bit hard done by.
So far the only game that has done the ps3 any justice (IMO) has been uncharted.
In the long run i think 360 will always have prettier games since it has a much better graphics card compared to the ps3s Nvidia7600GT equivalent, + Sony is stuck with openGl only as opposed to MS with DirectX+OpenGl.
The ps3s games will however continue to take advantage of the space available on bluray along with a more advanced cpu, giving much larger, more engaging game worlds.
Long story short im glad i have both consoles and am a total fanboy of both;)
danlisa
03-19-08, 08:12 AM
You've hit the nail on the head there Flakmonkey.
Cross platform games pull the PS3 reviews down. Basically, all cross platform games are developed on the 360 because it's easier for the coders, then it is ported (badly) to the PS3.
However, if the dev studios aren't lazy and actually dev/code for the PS3 directly, the difference is outstanding. Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Motorstorm, Resistance, Warhawk & Eye of Judgement all prove this. If you take the time to learn the PS3 coding & hardware specs, you will get an infinitively different result.
As for lengthy HDD installs, true but both consoles are moving in this direction and is actually determined by how the game is developed. Again, if they are lazy they will go with HDD installs. That said, the games I mention above do not require addtional HDD space other than save games. The only PS3 dedicated upcoming game I know of that will require HDD space is GT5, where something like 5.8GB will be installed. However, that is understandable considering the extra functions this game brings.
You know, as much as I would like to say that one console is better than the other, I can't. They are different architecture and everything that is achievable on these consoles is in the hands of the game studios.
That said Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots will own all!:p

Every game that was supposed to 'rock' the ps3 turned out sucking, according to the reviews.
Which games specifically? Examples please because so far every game that has been designed on & for the PS3 have not been anything other than brilliant.
Excuse me people.:nope: The big game this year for PS3 will be Starwars Force Unleashed!

THE POWER hahahahaahhaaaaa:ping:
This is the only reason why I like PS3 soo much. Now if they can convert Mass effect to PS3 then all will be great. But I hear Mass Effect is comming on PC soon:up:
By the way I don't hate XBOX 360 I hate MS.;)

The whole point of my post was to indirectly comment on the Force Unleashed release date (being the day I'll have to buy an X360).
But Force Unleashed is a cross platformer... Probably developed on the X360 and ported to everything else. I'm gonna wait and see which console it runs best on, as this is probably the only game I'll be playing on a console.

:rotfl: Thanks for the laugh.
I suppose the 6 exclusive titles I mention above don't warrant a mention? Of course, you're basing this on reviews, come back when you own them & have played them. Otherwise, you are in no position to have a balanced opinion.

I'm not going to get involved in a "battle of the fanboys" or a "nuhuh-yeshuh" argument; online nonetheless. I'm just stating my personal opinion, and as is typical of this site, it gets attacked as if by sharks.
Thanks friendly people of subsim!

Only immature people who can't put forward a balanced and informed discussion/argument resort to this type post. I do not.

Personal opinions are fine but they must be based on some known fact. The fact is that you don't own a PS3 and you haven't played the games that were specifically built for the PS3 so you can't have an informed opinion about their quality. Using a review as 'your' personal opinion is flawed because it's not a verdict that you have reached but rather one you have assumed to be true because someone else put it in print.
I have a 'personal opinion' about people who own X360's BUT I do not voice it because it has no bases in truth.
As for your 'opinion' of Subsim, this has no place in this discussion and is in fact a reflection of your maturity and debating skills. If you can't venture a sensible discussion, don't post.

No problem. Come again.:D

I never have played a ps3, true; because I really don't make enough money to buy one. My 360 was a gift. I never said the ps3 was God-awful, I'd probably buy one if I had the money, along with a Wii. I'm just saying for what I've done with my 360, it's been good for me. Also, I was just saying that from what I've heard from reviewers and friends that own it/a friend that works in a game store, the ps3 titiles haven't been living up to what they were supposed to, I'm sure in a year's time, it'll have a selection equal to that of the 360. Most reviews that I have seen for PS3 originals have been mostly in the mediocre range. And no, I won't paste the links, because I know for every site I give, someone's going to say "Their payed off! by Microsoft"....because, y'know, sony is incapable of doing something unethical
In my original post, I was also noting the budding (but subsided) age-old argument that "I don't buyz xbox 'cuz Microsoftz is the suxorz". I just have a problem with people who dislike a company because they've been successful.
Sorry if I "ruffled some feathers", but I don't typically do a 60-minute reasearch session before I post.
Something important to remember is that the reviewers/friends only think what they think about a game. Everyone has different tastes, including reviewers. :yep:

I have 2 games for my PS3 they are great in there own way but I'm not too drawn to them. One I bought for my daugther Ratchet Clanks Future and one I bought for myself because I felt it to be the best choice at the time. Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. I like the COD4 for its graphics and mutliplay. Nice story too those cutscenes are awesome. Oh I do like shooting in that US Gunship with night vision and thermal...
Ratchet has alot of little details that gives the game its own realism in that worlds vision. Action slash game is easy to play with some puzzles. Fun for a kid...
But I like the old long slow style RPG games. Oblivion I already have on PC. So I know right now all they have is shooters and hack and slash games. But In time new stuff will comeout.
I suggest those of you who own a PS3... If you want her to have a long life get Nyko's Intercooler High efficency Snap on Cooling Device.
My PS3 used to heat up badly... I got this baby and shes nice an cool.
Good Hunting all.

Purely out of interest, what ambient temperature were the surroundings?
Also, have you added a new HDD? There have been reports of 7200rpm HDD's causing heat problems.
For example my living room is always @ 21oC or less and my PS3's internal fan never goes into high gear but my PS3 is on top of my PC desk and has alot of clear space around it. Standing vertically BTW.;)

They also made one for the 360, which I bought. Probably the reason why I've never experienced the "Ring of Death". :D
And yes, the gunship mission of CoD4 was absolute gold!

:yep: I still have COD4 installed and when bored, go and play the mission. Just great.

Lol, my friend made that mistake. He put his horizontally on his living room carpet and within a few hours of use it stopped reading disks. How we laughed...
Although I prefer PS3's, probably because my first console was a PSX, when you compare them both, they are basically the same console. They have the same RAM, proc speed etc. but I think overall the PS3 has better features, like Blu-Ray, free internet, Uncharted etc. And I really can't stand the 360's pad. Anyway I think I've still had more fun with my PSX than any next gen console. MOH ftw! ;)

I don't know what exact details of the original HDD. I haven't changed it yet. I still have the 40gig I don't know if its 7200RPM or 5400RPM? I have my PS3 in my TV cabinet its at the lowest shelf where the floor is coolest lying down. Room temp is about 25C and floor temp is about 18C But its winter here and cold. When summer comes this will be much hotter.:yep: I have airconditioning but still. Anyhow the Cooler fan device cost me $33 Can. So it was a good investment for a PS3 since I didn't pay nothing for the PS3.;)
Ahhh... the day draws near...
I haven't checked, anyone know if the release date for Force Unleashed is still July 29th?
I guess I'm more partial to the PS3 after the discussion on this thread.
