View Full Version : Gato propeller guards missing?
Take a look at this:

Has this always been this way, or did a patch screw it up?

Some boats had propeller guards as built, some had them added (welded) after the war. During the war it was customary for the boats that didn't have the guards to receive temporary ones.
Gino can shed more light on this.
Here's some photos of the USS Barb, without welded prop guards and with the add-on ones, late in the war:

Some boats had them, some boats didn't and then some boats had temporary ones, which were only used in the harbor. Especially the temorary ones are nice to see. They merely 'clamp' on and are removed when the boat went to see.
Usually the tender/harbor kept them, and used them on all boats that came in.
All the museum boats have them, since after the war everyone of them got them, that didn't already have them.
Cod got them after the war.
If you check Navsource carefully, then you can find a lot of info on the photos. You only have to know where to look...

During development of the game Gino has bugged us a lot about the propellor guards in order to make us remove them where inappropriate :D

The Torsk built in 1945 has the mounting assembly for the guards. I do not believe these were installed. I do not know what determined what boat got the guards installed and others did not. She might have had them at one time. Currently they are covered with steel and it looks very much like original construction.

LOL :rotfl: , check the Torsk website, there are some photos there with the Torsk and her prop guards. For example: The 1948 dockphoto: http://www.usstorsk.net/photoalbum/48guilfoil/tpic4801.htm
1952 New London and Med cruise: http://www.usstorsk.net/photoalbum/52daly/tpic522.htm
1960: Med Tour:

So, where did you put them? Who stole the off the boat? :hmm:

Funny part is I went looking for pictures after I typed that and could not find any:rotfl:. I stand corrected. They are certainly gone and do not know were they are. Do you have them? :rotfl: I'm thinking perhaps removed in drydock when the hull was repaired years ago. Possible rusted to badly for repair. A lot of history of the old girl I do not know.
