Today I sank some enemy merchants. All the other I sank showed as a red symbol, this one had a Japanese flag, when it sank the message panel said "enemy unit destroyed". Why would this one show grey? There are several in the same area that I was assigned to partol and they are all red.

Perhaps you didn't gain visual contact and identify the ship as enemy?

I thought grey ships are those not sunk by you. Perhaps there were some US aircraft or ships involved in the action? Collision? Weather? Enemy fratricide?

That's possible, there were three ships and they were close, maybe one hit the other. It was night so it shouldn't have been planes but I have read posts here about planes at night, so that could be too.
Elanaiba: I did ID it with a Japanese flag. I was being very careful because there was a refit station and there was also a base nearby, not one with an anchor but I checked it out and Friendly forces were going in and out of the harbor.

Just curious about it. Thanks for the answers.

I've had grey ship symbols before - always when I sink a ship using sound contact only. I think elanaiba is correct - you didn't have visual contact.

Well, not attempting to start an arguement, but it's pretty hard to verify three ships with Japanese flags on them by sound.
Now maybe an explanation that would make sense is if the torpedo that actually sank it was fired at the second ship in the line, and the two I shot at the "grey" target didn't actually sink it and it got hit by a miss from another ship, and I wasn't actually targeting it at the time.

I've had several that were gray because I could make out the flag but the ship ID I couldn't because of bad weather. If you got credit for it, you sunk it. If it is not in your log, then something else got it.

Ok, now I see what is meant. I apologize to Elanaiba and Stufer, I misunderstood what you meant by ID, I thought you meant ID it as Allied or enemy. I did ID it but the game wouldn't know that because I am still practicing with manual targeting so that day I just used auto so I could just go out and sink some tonnage. It was one of those moonless pitch black nights, so it's possible. The other two went down red ?? Anyway didn't mean to make a big issue about this, I just get curious about why things happens in a game that are not explained anywhere.
Thanks again for putting up with a noob.
