View Full Version : GWX2 Escort Radar Range Table?

Anyone have a charge effective radar ranges for escorts?
The horizon on the open ocean I think is 12nm. However, radar is mast mounted so that would extend detection quite a bit.
Anyone have any tables or numbers? How much bearth do I need to give a convoy while I overhaul not to be picked up on radar?
Thanks.

13.4989 n.m. sounds about right.
Then you must factor in the crew rateing
and other things.

I think you are 14 meters off on your calculations. :hmm::hmm::hmm:

Seriously, I am not asking for a chart down to the meter, but I was curiously what radar behaviors are out on the ocean. It's no different than knowing how far you can be spotted in particular weather conditions and trying to avoid getting too close. Or knowing how many RPM you can put on your screws before you are heard.
But if you want to poke fun of me. So, be it then. :)
Trial and error and getting a feel for it will be better and more immersive than number calculation.

Would it not be more beneficial to play the mod as close to realism as you can (which judging by your previous posts I get the impression you want to).
The Germans often knew little or anything about the technological advances the Allies were making until it was too late.
The Kaleuns often learned by their mistakes (the lucky ones anyway.....most paid with their lives and those of their crew).
It would appear your looking for the shortcuts to success.
If all the parameters and allowances/tweaks were posted here it would have a detrimental effect/impact on a great number of GWX users who would rather play the game with that 'unknown variable' that always exists within the fog of war. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

We get plenty of fog in SH3 & GWX, bwa-ha-ha-ha :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

That should be sorted in 2.1 http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5158/winkbigid2.gif

No problem. I'll work it out myself.
Of course, games give more practice than anyone gets in real life.
But it is just game playing. Wargamers tend to propagate what I call the myth of the "Kung Fu Master".
Meaning that the warrier can be skilled enough with his rifle, tank, plane, or sub to keep himself alive. I say it is a myth, since combat is a highly statistical experience. For most who are exposed, the numbers game will catch up with you.
So, why the myth?
(1) What fun would gaming be if the player was not in control, but the universal dice roller was?
(2) In real life, we do need to convince ourselves that dangerous activities are under our control. If not, we would be suffer PSDT before even seeing the worst.
So, we players drive our tanks, planes, and subs with great expertise. However, for ultimate realism you would more or less would die in the game no matter what you do given adequate playing time. For example, the best evasive techniques could be used, but someone with no idea of what they were doing would push a DC over the side just blowing holes in the water and that would be you. That's realism, but makes for rotten game play.

Pretty well sums up my gaming experience. I always use my best evasive techniques and I always get blown out of the water. Doesn't get boring though

Oh, god. Thinking of radar in gwx 2.0 reminds me of a nasty little experience i had about 20 mins ago. I was shadowing a convoy in heavy rain, at night. I knew roughly which way there were going, so I tried skirt the edge by about 15km, to be safe. All's well in 64x when 'Ship spotted - bearing 188, short range'. Sweat squirts out of every available orifice. I swing around and see a FRIGATE, not 200m away. It's not firing, no lights, it's just steadily gaining - creeping - up on me. Crash dive. Stern tube zero gyro - FIRE. I follow the torpedo with external cam. It goes directly under the Frigate - perfect. Except for the failsafe - 200m is not enough to activate the pistol. PRANG - the torpedo gets slapped by a prop. I get some DC damage to the stern torpedo room, but given the ****ty weather, i slink off withouth too much trouble.
Anyway, i'd also like to know about the safe radar radius. It's probably at least 20km or so. Whenever I try my 15km technique (in clear weather) I get a nosey escort coming out and checking.

I can't give the answer your looking for I'm afraid, but it needs to be remembered that in real life most devices that use radio waves are affected by the weather especially over water (sea clutter), it's to do with propagation of the radio waves. So I would say that whilst on some days radar could detect objects a long way out, on other days the range probably wouldn't be so long or it would be affected by many false contacts due to sea clutter etc. In game though I would imagine that these parameters are preset.
