Just went through all IJN-ships in the Museum again.
Look what came up, when I called for the Hiyo-class fleet carrier:

It's the jungle-camo Hiyo, intended to be rammed into an island in the Pacific and used as an airstrip when the fuel runs out

I don't even have a Hiyo in my museum, is that in a MOD? In my museum this looks like a Taiho. I know you were pointing out the green, I was just curious as to why it isn't in my museum.

From the Valley of the Jolly Green Godzilla? :o

Hiyo and Junyo were both converted passenger liners. Must have been an Irish line.

Lurker, why did they use this colour? With what in mind?:o

Possibly the same reason the British used pink vehicles in Northern Africa - it worked as a means of camouflage. Some Japanese study someplace most likely identified 'sea-sick green' as a useful colour to paint large ships so as to make the carriers less distinctive at distance.

Because it's historical

What? Because they have been painting their carriers this colour for thousands of years?:rotfl:

Here's the box art from the Japanese scale model. Still green. From what I've been reading about Japanese camo during the war both Junyo and Hiyo were, for whatever reason usually some shade of green.

It was not just the Hiyo and Junyo that were green, several others also were.
scroll down to the bottom of page 8 & top of page 9 for a color pic of the sunken IJN Amagi. two smaller enhanced pictures are at the top of page 9.
