View Full Version : Someone please have pity on a NOOB JSGME/7zip user

I'm lost. I downloaded the latest version of JSGME. I put it into my Wolves of the Pacific folder. The instructions said to run it and it would create the MODS folder. I ran it and it didn't create anything. I made the folder myself. I placed the trigger maru 7zip file into the mod folder. I told 7 zip to extract all here. The hard drive made noise but no files appeared in the folder. Instead they were placed in the C\users\my name\apps\data folder (which I was unable to locate anywhere on my hard drive to be able to delete the files). The odd part was JSGME showed the trigger maru mod in the available mods section. I would really appreciate any help I could get. I have had this game for months but have been unable to play it due to an out of date computer. Now I have a new rig and (being an idiot) I can't add the mods I want. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.
Sounds like you are running Vista.

Like Pv says, it sounds like you are running Vista. From the JSGME readme:
MICROSOFT VISTA USERS: If you are running the Generic Mod Enabler on Vista and are having problems with mods "taking" (the usual symptom is that the MODS folder itself is not created when the Generic Mod Enabler is first run), then simply right-click JSGME.exe in Windows Explorer and select "Run as Administrator". Alternatively, right-click JSGME.exe and select "Properties". In the properties window select the "Compatibility" tab and check "Run this program in compatibility mode" and in the box below select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)". In some instances you may need to apply both solutions.

Is Vista the reason 7 zip put the files in the wrong location when I told 7 zip to "extract here"?

Mr Redbird, the following applies to Vista: You can circumvent many of these types of problems by not installing Silent Hunter 4 (or 3) into the default location in your "Program Files" folder. Rather specify your own folder, such as "C:\Games\Silent Hunter\....." for example. The reason for this is in Vista, the Program Files folder is 'special' and very different from how it was in XP. Vista protects this folder, which means when you add things into the games in this folder, Vista does funny things with the files, actually placing these other files into special hidden folders, which is why JSGME cannot create the MODS folder, and your mods won't appear there, nor will your mods apply properly into the game.
So if possible and if you haven't done so, I advise uninstalling your game and reinstalling it, but customise the installation to a different location. This extra bit of work will save you issues in the long term as you use more and more mods.
I actually thought there was another thread that gave instructions similar to what I just said above but I didn't find it.

Thanks. I will reinstall and follow these excellent instructions. You guys are great at helping a shipmate out. Thanks again...

I created a folder on the C drive named Ubisoft. I installed SH4 to C:\ubisoft and when the installation was complete I checked the C:\ubisoft folder and it was empty. The game actually installed to the games folder instead. I know I directed the installation program to the C:\ubisoft folder as I checked it very carefully before I hit the start button. Is this another Vista thing? Do I need to run the SH4 install.exe in compatibility mode as a Win XP program?
I'm sorry to keep bothering you guys. I'm new to Vista and haven't quite figured it out yet.

Sorry didn't notice your post until now.
Vista will quite happily install the game wherever you specify in the game setup. I don't know why the game would have reinstalled back into Program Files, unless you didnt change the default.... it won't automatically find a folder on your hard drive named Ubisoft. And you don't have to create the folder before you install, it creates the folder you specify in the custom setup. Unforunately I'm not at my gaming system right now so I can't give you a step-by-step, sorry!
In short, before the game started copying files, you should have seen where the game will install by default into the Program Files folder... at this point you click Change (or is it Browse, I can't remember) and then you either type a new location (such as C:\Ubisoft) or if you previously created the folder you browse to that folder and it will fill it in for you. Probably best to just type it then you can be sure.
Hopefully you get it figured out, or someone that can explain things better than me comes along to help you ;) Note: make sure you uninstall the game from Add/Remove Programs (or the games Uninstall utility) before you try to reinstall again.
