Patrol 14, Nov 1940... Maiden voyage in our new VIIC, we've barely gotten to know our new shipmates and I got stalking a convoy into Portsmouth, gleeful for the impressive new loadout of torps on our shiny new U-Boat and the flower class that's been escorting them starts my way... I figure i was okay since i was at 2kts at peri depth and by my calculations the course change followed the zig zag he had been making all along anyway...

Wrong... The first can i actually witnessed thru my attack scope exploding literally on my bow... The 2nd & 3rd probably were direct hits too but i was busy for that 2 seconds setting Damage Control, although i quickly discovered it was futile as the entire crew was dead within 5 seconds of the 1st explosion.

Rats... Would never have happened in a type II i don't think. He detected me despite probably a 10 degree or less AOB to me.

I was a little sad. I'd kinda grown attached to that crew.

Oh well. I'd been looking forward to adding SH3 Commander as well as merged campaign to my next career. I'm sticking with my IID as long as i can. I like the rich hunting near ports (shallow water) and i've had great success with the type 2.

I guess i had to die sometime...

Kaleu Antiacus... I am having the same thoughts myself! I am almost at the point where I will want to upgrade to a VII or IX. I am currently commanding a IIA... but I wonder if it wouldn't be more worth my while to just take a IID and try to go the whole war in that thing. Every type VII career I've tried has failed... I've never made it past late 1942 in a VII with GWX. I've never tried a IX. So, it's either a IX or a IID... and I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about a IID... especially when you get that IID #2 conning tower with the extra flak gun... good for sinking small coastal vessels. If I'm not mistaken, IID's can be equipped with borkum, metox, naxos, etc as well as decoy launchers, Alberich and acoustic torpedoes when they come out... so we could still get almost all the toys that the big subs get. The only exceptions I believe are hydrophones (type II's are permanently stuck w/ the GHG) and radar... as far as I know, type II's can't mount radar. I think all other upgrades are available (except maybe schnorkel??) That's an important one though!!

Yeah... I think i just need to accept i'm a type II sailor. I've only run one career thus far in SH3 with GWX, OLC, et al., but i've gotten out of many scrapes with the type 2 unscathed. My very first patrol in a 7 boat and i'm detected and sunk on the first shebang.

No way my friend.

Nummer zwei uber alles sucka.

Oh yeah :yep: I would not go near shallow water in a type VII. In fact I wouldn't even go into shallow water in a type II! I'm not comfortable unless I have at least 200m of water under the keel.

And I have absolutely no desire to see Portsmouth :D

You're definitely right... I should have been deep & silent when that destroyer passed. I got confused a couple times due to I think what was a course change and a close encounter with another convoy. That was my 4th attempt at setting up for an attack and i should have called it off when they came upon me much quicker than expected. Having no map contacts can get crazy. You should have seen how marked up my chart was at that point :)
