Advice on a new boat!!

Ok, so, i've just docked in at my new French port at Lorient. I'm in the 2nd Flotilla, and its now September 1940. I have some 9000+ renown, should I stick with my trusty VIIB boat, or bump myself into the IXB??

I'm really wanting a VIIC but I'm not seeing one avaliable at the moment. Course, I could transfer to another flotilla maybe?? I'm sure they wouldn't say no to a Kaleun with the Ritterkreuz with Leaves, Swords & Diamonds :)

Anyway, I've come to trust U-50 as a boat. I've had her since the day one of the war, and have sailed 11 patrols in her with pretty good results and she's always come home safe and sound.

Thoughts anyone? :)

It really depends on where you wanna go. If exploring distant shorelines off Africa or the Americas sounds appealing then go for the IXB. If you like getting in more patrols and getting home sooner then go with the trusty VIIC. ;) The VIIC also dives quicker and deeper if longevity is your goal.

Personnaly, I like the IX. It dives like a pig in gelatin and is less maneuverable than the VIIC. But it has nicer views from the bridge, a lot more torpedoes than the VII and it can go places.

Like Balz says, it has better acoustics for his choir.

It takes some getting used to, one has to be a touch more cautious, especially against aircraft because of the diving time.

I like thee long patrols to, but sometimes you have to go for the North Atlantic fights with a VII

The VIIC would be more familiar to you as its characteristics are very similar to the VIIB (I'm a VIIB fan like you).

The VIIC vs. the VIIB is a tad slower but dives slightly faster and, if I recall correctly, somewhat greater range.

The type IX boats will feel like a lumbering walrus until you get used to it but you are trading off diving speed and maneuverability in exchange for more firepower and much greater range.

I'm with 1st Flotilla out of Kiel and the VIIC did not become available to me until mid-1940. Perhaps that is why you haven't seen it yet; its too early in the year.

Good morning, Kaluens!! I had almost the same questions myself, except that I started out with the first flotilla and was given command of a type II, U-11. We've done well so far, but it's coming close to the time when I will be upgrading boats... and I had exactly the same thought. VII or IX? I'm going for longevity and survivability... and so while a VII is more manueverable and faster diving, it always seems to get patrol zones that are in the thick of all the action... which, I'm guessing, is probably not good for a Kaluen's health once 1943 and 1944 rolls around. With a IX, you get more distant patrol areas, where you probably encounter more lone ships and have quieter patrols (on average). That's just my 2 cents... can anyone who has made it to 1943 or 44 verify this... since I never have!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

There you get the VIIC since August 1940 and the area of operation should (I don´t know how it is in SH3 GWX 2.0) with the 2nd wave of "Paukenschlag" also the American Eastcost!

And if you fear the distance .... there should also be a milk cow for us :D :D

As the mates told before me the feeling of the VII to the IX is like drive a sport motobike and a Gold Wing :lol: :lol:

Bottom line is that it is a matter of personal preference. Remembering that it is only a game...and we already know the outcome.

Mine is mixed...so I do both...sometimes I play a 7C, sometimes a 9...all depends on how I feel that day(week)

It was such a different experience... and a nice change from the North Atlantic.
