Until recently, more than 100 rusty military tanks lay half-buried and almost forgotten in deserted fields near Bulgaria's southeastern border, planted as a Cold War deterrent to NATO's southern flank.
But the theft of a rare vintage model sent the army scurrying this month to start a recovery operation to save those still left from looters.
Ooooh, I'll have to get in touch with my Bulgarian friend and ask him to get me one

I think I might take one of those fly out, drive home holidays to Bulgaria. No need for a hire car. I'll just take back home one of those rusty Panzerkampfwagen V Panther tanks please. Perhaps then later I could flog it off to Bovington Tank Museum. :hmm:

After seeing "The Amazing Race" last night and seeing them drive T-64 tanks, I want one!:D

Ooooo !! OOOoooo ! Can you have one of those shipped to the States ? I mean they won't mind. They're just sitting around there. :D
Don't be so eager, especially to drive one...;)
But the army, despite its huge recovery effort, has raised doubts about their real value.
Kalev said all of the tanks recovered so far had already been stripped by looters.
"We started recovering them to save them from the scrap gangs. But what we're finding more resembles just holed-out soup cans," he said.
"My personal opinion is that they're no good for anything," he added, pointing to the rusty hull of a Panzer IV.

No worse than the buses around here then ;)

I dunno. I've seen people restore entire vintage cars from little more than a few rusty scraps of metal. I would expect even the stripped hull of a Panzer IV or any other ww2 tank would be valuable to somebody.

As long as the outter shell is still relatively intact it would make an AWESOME lawn ornament. I can just imagine what my wife would say !
I just hope there wasn't any ammunition in those tanks before the looters got there.
