It's early '42. My trusty USS Sailfish is north of Java in shallow waters (max. 100ft). A task force consisting of 1 Takao, 2 Naka, 16 Small Liners and a big load of DD's is steaming by. ComSubPac knows about it and ordered me to engage. Now the DD's are whacking me constantly (they are a bit angry, after i blew up the Takao).
Would you have pressed the attack home?

Yes. You don't get too many shots at capital ships and if you do it won't always be in optimal deep water conditions. In real life, there's more at stake of course, but if you declined to attack when ordered, there probably would have been a new skipper waiting to take command when you returned home.

No. I wouldn't. Remember your friend is surprise. Once the escorts are alerted your chances of another hit decreases dramatically and so is your chances of getting out alive also. My take on it is get within 7000-8000 yards of the biggest, slowest target and hit and run. You're no use to the war effort dead.

If you check your mission log, you should see that sinking the Takao will have given you sufficient tonnage to accomplish that mission. I say that discretion is the better part of valor and you should run away bravely. You could always try to re-engage the remaining task force members at a later time.
In the long haul you, your crew and your boat will serve the war effort better if you adopt an aggresive yet cautious approach to your missions. Suicide missions are always a waste.
