Terrific scene, I am a proud owner of both the movie and the even better book. I read the book for the first time at about eleven or twelve years of age. Hooked on the battle of the Atlantic ever since :)

Difficult decision. I dunno what I would do, if I were the captain. Save the survivors, or depth charge the boat.

Maybe the captain can save the live of the survivors by setting the depth charge settings deep, so that the charge explodes deep in water, reducing the percussion force of the explosion.

I'm not a physics geek, so I don't know whether it helps, through

ya bad decision by the capt. he could just stop and rescue them survivors, that uboat is going too slow submerged to make a good distance away from the destroyer, so after all survivor are picked up he can resume the hunt 4 teh uboat

I first read the book just last year; have never seen the movie.

If you can find it, a very good read is his actual memoirs, Monsarrat at Sea. During the war he actually published short stories about the war as seen first hand, plus some more fiction and more about the war looking back from thirty years later.

A very good book.

Wow, that was some decision he had to make. Personally, I would have stopped for the men in the water. I would take my chances and I suspect the rest of the crew would have as well.
