I've read in this forum that Convoys generate a fair distance from any port. Does anyone know how far?

Also, I had really good success camping out inside the Southend Estuary, still 40 miles from port or so, but noticed heavy traffic in & out.

Do single ships generate closer to ports?

Any information would be great

They spawn fairly close to the ports, and in their historic gathering locations (for convoys) it would however be wise not to loiter on the spawn point but about 50km off because it may happen that something is supposed to spawn within rendering range of your sub it may not spawn at all.

it can also lead to strange surpises like destroyer appearing where there wasn't one a few seconds ago and attacking:o

I just advised someone in a totally different context: Fire up the mission editor, open up the RND layer and zoom in on Halifax or New York. You'll see the hundreds of convoys and where they start. Click on one, zoom out and look at the waypoints, and you'll see how they run. Don't worry about gathering information you shouldn't have - you'll never remember even a tiny part of it all.

But it will give you an idea of what's going on, as well as an idea of just how much work went into GWX.
