Balz's career keeps crashing to desktop on loading. BDU is thinking of giving him a desk job. :yep:

Hmmmm.....

We cannot have that!

What would be do without him?

Perhaps he should start a new career? Warp back in time and try again?

I've had this happen to me a few times. Try loading a previous patrol. You'll need to play it again, but it should work. If not, then Balz is borked

I believe that with a book coming out, it's possible Kapt. Balz could get a new (torpedoe data) computer....wink, wink......:lol::lol:

Yah, just ground the guy. He's gotta be happy with that getting more time for his choir and imbibing practices ;)

Surely someone knows enough about .sav and crew .cfg files to render some emergency first aid for Balz?

We can't let the most colorful character to ever sail with a tea cozy simply fade away! I have just too much fun reading of his exploits.

I have a suggestion. :know:

Everyone who wishes to take a crack at fixing Balz's career should step forward and then you, Brag, could zip the career and post it for download, along with a brief description of any mods and utilities you use with SH3, for those brave souls who offer to help.

Long live the great hero of the U-bootwaffe!

Yeah & the idea seconded too!

I'd for one like to try my hand in that in order to familiarize myself with the savegame / career configuration. Won't in all likelihood get anything DONE though, being the sad n00b that I am, but would still like to try just out of curiosity... will probably kill the cat, I know, but still

EXTRA' EXTRA' READ ALL ABOUT IT:

GWX 2.0 to tough for Balz and he bails for a desk job:huh: Yep you heard it right ,the mighty J.S. Balz's mother sent a note to BDH and demanded he be excused from the war since it was too tough on her baby:roll:

Interesting idea. Being a total computer twit, I would need step by tiny step instructions.

So far, I have tried loading another career and it has worked a couple of times. I have GWX2.0 and no other mods.

Balz: If I can't have a U-boat command give me a job as a secret agent.
Brag: You're a Kaleun living during WWII and your position there is fixed.
Balz: I can wear a tea cozy in Africa, lots of people do that there.
Brag: No!
Balz: I can be a bad guy, I can doctor intelligence reports, I can commit treason, I can manipulate the press.
Brag: No!
Balz: I can create catastrophies.
Brag. We have created all that already in Kingmaker.
Balz: I can be a prtotagonist. I can fight evil, I can outsmart all my enemies. I hear you have one hell of a babe in Kingmaker. I could seduce her and find out her secrets.
Brag: No way!
Balz: I could say hoochie woochie in every page.
Brag: Aaaarrrgghh.
Balz: My choir would overwhelm the Evil One.
Brag: Maybe you could go out and sell Kignmaker.
Balz: Oh yeah?
Brag: Yup.
Balz: How should I pitch it?
Brag: Buy the book now. It doesn't have Balz, it doesn't have hoochie woochie nor tea cozies. It is a thriller of great suspense meant to nudge LeCaree into number two spot.
Balz: Phooey, go and sell that book yourself. Hoochie-woochie, boo-boom.

Here we go, Brag...

If you know how to use WinZip or any other similar utility for zipping a file, then all you need to do is look in "My Documents" for a folder labeled "SH3".

Now, Balz's career will be located at 'SH3\data\cfg\Careers\YOUR KALEUN', where "YOUR KALEUN" is the name of your u-boat commander. So, for Balz it should be 'SH3\data\cfg\Careers\Balz' or "J.S. Balz" or whatever way you named him.

All you need do is take that one folder, the one with Balz's name, zip it up, and then provide it to someone by e-mail attachment or whatever method you prefer.

If you don't have a zip utility of any sort, then get either 7-zip or IZArc, they're both free and/or open source.

Once you have one of those installed, you should be able to zip Balz's folder by right-clicking on it, mouse down to the 7-zip or IZArc entry in the pop-up menu and then selecting either "Add to archive.." (for 7-zip) or "Add to Balz.zip" (for IZArc).

Before you can say "Hoochie-woochie boom-boom", you'll have the zip file! It will be located in the parent folder where the Balz folder is and have the same name as the folder but with a .zip (IZArc) or .7z (7-zip) ending.

This means that "Balz.zip" would be found in 'SH3\data\cfg\Careers'.

Holler back if you hit a sang. Good luck! ;)

I am bitterly dissapointed!!!!

I think its because BDu is getting tired of Herr Balz sinking too many ships, and is taking all the glory for himself.....

That's why I recommended either IZArc or 7-zip. Both are absolutely free.

Then again, this is all sort of a moot point now that you've decided to "reboot" Balz's career with a new boat and crew.

Make regular backups of your career by copying your kaleun's folder to someplace else like 'My Documents\SH3\Balz Backup', preferably every time you exit the game.

Pester JSCones to include that feature into SH3 Commander. Backing up your career and crew with a single click would sure save a lot of people some headaches, but especially you, Brag.

Good hunting! :arrgh!:
