This is a silly question, but I don't seem to be able to find my screen shots taken in game with CTL F11.

I thought they were supposed to save into the main SH4 folder.

Any help?

Mine save in the main Sh4 folder as .bmp. Do a search for "SH4Img" mine all start with this, for example "SH4Img@2008-02-03_22.53.48_453.bmp" Maybe yours saved somewhere else. Did you use the default path when installing the program? Could be the reason. Don't know if the version matters, I am 1.4.

The in-game dialog box tells you to where they were saved...

Excellent point LukeFF! I had forgotten that.
Another thing I thought of, and DS Don't take this as an insult because I don't know you or you experience with computers. I have seen people do it wrong before (not in this game but other things.) You do know you have to "hold down" the Ctrl key when you press F11 right? I have seen beginners press the Ctrl then the F11. Again not meant as an insult but none of us knew that until someone told us. Only trying to eliminate the simple stuff first.

Hi,

Thank for that. I know the in game dialogue box points to the main SH4 directory, but they are not there even though the dialogue box says they should be. Will try the "Sh4img" search.

No prob with the Ctl + F11.

I'm suspecting they are saving to a different path, or Vista is blocking their creation somehow.

My install path is C:\program files\ubi\silent hunter 4 wolves of the pacific. I think this is the default, is it not?

Windows search for files with "Sh4Img" turned up no hits. It's a mystery...:hmm:

If I'm not mistaken, Vista will not allow any files to be changed in Program Files unless an installer does it. I've seen it often suggested players install the game outside this area when using Vista so you can install mods and tweak files. Did you look in Documents and Settings?

DS;
you have the default path (assuming you actually installed your game to C;drive).
If you use Windows explorer and go into your main SH4 folder you'll see among other files a bunch of files such as the following;
SH4Img@2008-02-02_10.21.00_999.bmp
These .bmp files are your screenshots. Use a graphics program to open them or simply doubleclick on each file and it'll open in MSPaint.

Hi all,

Problem solved. It looks like the screen shots were saved to a different path. They were not in the main SH4 directory, but in what looks like another SH4 directory of (username)\appdata\virtualstore\programfiles\ubiso ft\silent hunter 4 wolves of the pacific.

I found some other old mods and sh4 related files in there as well. I wonder if this was an earlier install, or a place where vista puts old folders that have been overwritten with new installs, or a security measure as PV was suggesting. I have no problems running mods with JSGME though.

What's interesting is that you can't see or navigate to it through the C: drive and sub folders, and searchs for it's contents wil turn up nothing. I'm not sure how I got to it, but I placed a short cut to this folder so I can access my screen shots. Maybe some Vista experts out there can explain the appdata\virtualtore folders and how they can be accessed by conventional means (I came across it through one of several processes running at the same time, and I'm not sure which one unveilled it).

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions.

Glad you solved the problem! I don't have Vista so I can't help there.
Edit: I went in and checked and I have my Photo Recon mission pictures in a My documents\SH4\Data\photos, there is also a config folder, I wonder if that may be why they are going there, because Vista said so and we all know Microsoft knows better than us where they should go.

Run sh4 in admin mode, the screenshots will show up in your sh4 game directory then. If you aren't running in admin mode, the sh4.exe won't have rights to create files in it's directory, so they end up in some crazy virtual folder.

...or at least this is how it works for me and vista64.

The other thing to do in Vista, is to not let SH4 install to the default directory when first loading in the gamefiles.

Go to your C drive if you only have one, and create a new folder and call it games or whatever you want, then create create a folder in there for SH4. (Do this so you can put other games in this folder too.)

When you install the SH4, navigate it to that SH4 folder, and install the gamefiles there.

If you have a second hard drive, it is best to put your games on that drive. That's what I did, so that my SH4 Directory reads like this, D:\Games\SH4\. That is where my screenshots default to when I take one.

That'a just one of the quirks to get used to with Vista. It takes time, to set it up, but you can get it to look and pretty much so mimic XP. I just wish Win7 was ready when I built this rig, as Vista 64 was the best that was available. I really anted XP 64, but they were out of stock, and didn't have anymore comin' in to the store.

The in-game dialog box tells you to where they were saved...

The in-game dialogue box LIES. :nope:

(click for big pic)
It gave me a path abbreviated from the beginning, which is as good as no path at all. I did a complete C: drive search for all Bitmaps before I tracked them down in the above location. (I was convinced that I wasn't saving any screen captures and was ready to reinstall SH4!).

Once I found the elusive files, I just added the above seven-subfolder path to my picture libraries in Windows 7 and I was done.

My wife has Win7 on her new computer, I have XP. I noticed win7 has a problem writing ANYTHING to the Programs folder without permission from you. That is part of the problem. And the photo op mission photos in XP do not go to the same folder as the screen captures. They are considered part of the mission so they go with the game save section.
