Permission to come aboard, OOD.

Hello, Captains... Thought I'd stop by the wardroom, introduce myself and check the weight of the java.

Name's Buidhe, pronounced boo-wee', and I haven't lived in the the deisel and ozone since SHII/DC. Bein' that rusty, I'm easing into this new IV/1.4/ROW world; my current Reality Level's around 50% and I'm not using manual TDC yet... still working over navigation and tactics and learning the interfaces. I do love to play without the Ouside View, however... sweatin' in the cold dark deep.

I'm into my third career's second sortie, stalking a convoy southeast of Honshu... and fortunately, Pearl wants me to sift out the merchants this time. Two days ago they wanted the escorts and, believe me, my lack of practice had me worried. I got two DDs, but only after shooting the first dead and having the other come in astern sniffin' for me and suffering a mysterious explosion that left several fires burning aft and her speed at a crawl. It could have been a runaway torp, I guess... things had been pretty busy... but I don't think so. I prefered to believe that some ninny dropped a depth charge hoisting it into the rack and so, since she was cripple-crossing aft, I followed the ninny's efforts with my own wee dart; the 'can came in half like a sausage and I slipped away with Pearl happy.

I'd forgotten just how immersive it can be to approach a convoy at 1x decks-awash just at sundown and call softly for periscope depth before skimming down the ladder just ahead of the rising tide and keying up the attack scope. The long dash has been run and we're right on station; the final dance with the destroyer screen is beginning and we are the Bandersnatch.

Curiousity's got me about one thing at this point: not sure I remember the exact meanings of the markings around visible vessels when targeted on the nav table. Seems like the big circle would be visibility range, with (for DDs, etc.) the next inner pacman being passive listening range, and the small innermost half-circle being active sonar capability. Am I close?

Also, I haven't found a conversion table for speed/distance/time in kts/yds/minutes or a degree/width/distance in thousands.. anyone know of such before I get out the spreadsheet and try to make one?

Thanks for the coffee... I'll tell the steward you're out of sugar on my way out.
