View Full Version : Infinite Planes Spawning at Rabaul?

I've got a strange problem. In my current campaign I have noted that there are a seemingly infinite number of airplanes spawning around Rabaul. I was given a mission to photograph aircraft carriers in the bay, and after successfully doing so, I sunk one of them. Shortly after this, airplanes started spawning all over the place. I'm now well out of the bay area (~30 nm or more), but planes are still going nuts. My air search radar guy is calling out contacts literally every 5 or 10 seconds (at 1x game time).

Is this much air coverage expected? If so, is there a way I can disable the air search radar so I can get to my next patrol area using higher TC? As it is right now, I can't go above 8x because of the stream of airplanes flying all around.

I'm using stock SH4 1.4, by the way.

I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if the carrier you sunk or one of it's sisters is spawning all these planes. Sometimes they keep spawning long after the carrier has departed.

I wish there was a better way of representing aircraft in the game than 'spawning'. However tracking each individual patrol plane and air squadron on their daily flights and routines would probably slow the game to a crawl.

The technical challenges of creating a more realistic 'feel' in the air layer are significant. At the moment there is only one MOD in the pipeline working on this, BUT there are some excellent MOD's that tackle this to a good level of success.

One is the RSRD (Run Silent Run Deep) MOD by Lurker. TM (Trigger Maru) by Ducimus also has some work in this area. RFB (Real Fleet Boat) may have tackled some of this also, best to check their threads.

All of the above are in the MODS Workshop area of these forums.

This is one of the unrealistic aspects of SH4. Spawning planes at that interval is not possible. Yes, if you sink an enemy all assets will try to search you out. I'm using TM and RFB (multiple installs of the sim) at the moment and night strikes early in the war was there. So, I can advise you to get the Airstrike Mod and use it until Ducimus corrects it. There was no problem with this spawning in RFB though.

The mods have addressed these issues, you might want to give them a try. TM, RFB, RSRD for example have addressed these issues.

If you can keep yourself from ever being seen by any of those planes, the density will gradually decrease. 30NM is not as far as you think. Some of those planes have hundreds of miles range.

I have played the same mission and got the plane swarm you got. The secret is to stay down ALL day at 2 knots below 100ft. 1 hour after sunset, cruise for a while at deck awash slowest speed while charging. Any sign of aircraft and go deep again for a while. Eventually the traffic will stop and you can high speed it out of there. 1 hr before dawn, go deep again if you are still within 150 miles of Rabaul. Keep this up and you'll be unmolested by planes. All you have to do is get sighted by ONE and the swarm will follow the direction of your last contact for days.

Air traffic has a radius of 500nm from "spawn" point and they have both outgoing trip and incoming trip, so you'll see the same aircraft twice.
