View Full Version : Feeling a bit lonely in 1939

Started a new career with GWX2.0. It's my first with this version. Got to my patrol area without any problems or any decent targets either. All I found on the way was a measily tug boat and a sloop. Sank both using the guns, no point in wasting torpedos on them. Had an Anson appear overhead just north of Scapa Flow and had to dive. Patrolled my assigned area and then went looking for action in the famous tanker alley. Arrived at the alley and began doing hydrophone sweeps but no ships. Spent a week there. Finally picked up one signal which turned out to be an American small tanker and that's it, absolutely nothing else. It was so bad that it caused me to go on a harbor raid.

Got to Plymouth and voila what do I see, Hood, parked nicely in the center dock. Now this is more like it. I approached her head on and was thinking of using the magnetics to take her out. Fired off 3 torps at about 11.5 depth but they all blew up right at the tip of the bow, weird how they didn't go underneath it. Afterwards I had to do some fancy maneuvering to get my self into a nice corner of the dock for a clean shot from the side. Still using magnetics. I put a fourth torp just below her second frontal turret which causes a fire to ignite but nothing else, so now it's looking like it's going to take five torps. I reload in the mean time. As soon as the first tube is ready again I fire, this time underneath her superstructure. The torpedo strikes home and sets off a massive explosion which with the new explosion mod it looks huge and this finally destroys her.

I quickly go silent and get the hell out of there. The patrols never picked me up.

Well, that's my patrol so far. If it wasn't for Hood, I really would not have had any decent targets. I'm crossing my fingers I find more ships before I have to head home. I don't remember 1939 being this quiet in the previous version of GWX. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I`ve found a lot of single merchants NW and SW of Ireland in my last two `39 patrols. Many small vessels like tramps etc. though.

Yep! 1939 in GWX2 is a ghost town for sure. A qualified radio/sonarman isn't helping as much as I'd hoped (in fact he's worse at spotting ships on sonar - even in perfect conditions - than my watch crew are at spotting them on the surface).

I'm hoping that as my crew get better and the war progresses, things will pick up a bit...

Things will definatly pick up. 1939 is a quiet time initially for the U-boats and you might be hard put to find some decent catches. Now my fellow Kaluens i'm going to give you something to laugh about. I was heading up north west through the Irish sea last night in U-50 when a contact report for a Large convoy came in....in 1939!!!! Brilliant I thought to myself, time to get myself some good tonnage.

I raced into a position ahead of the convoy, and then began to move down to intercept them. Dove down to 30mtrs and expected to hear the convoy so I could asertain their location.....nothing. absoutlely nothing. The damn convoy just seemed to have totally dissapeared and I never clapped my eyes on it :( I somehow LOST a large convoy in the narrows of the Irish sea guys!!! :88)

Its normal for it to be a bit quiet in early '39, but don't dispair. Things will start to pick up once you reach 1940, then its nothing but convoys:yep: .

But it your still stuck for targets, head on upto the north coast of Scotland, you should find plenty of single merchants, and even the occasional small convoy.

GWX2.0 is full of ships and convoys, a bit more difficult to find. And convoys zigzag a lot, easy to lose.

Imagine a U-Boat skipper coming back from patrol in 39 and saying this to Doenitz.

I think Doenitz would have promoted him, given him a Knight's Cross with a lot of leaves and swords and maybe even a diamond or two, and command of a Type XXI sub...

I expect Doenitz would have done the exact same thing. :rotfl:

In that case cross your fingers guys, we'll see what happens when I get back in port. I'm not expecting the XXI sub but some nice bling would be appropriate :D

You'll probably face a firing squad commanded by Captain Ernst Lindemann....for depriving him of some future glory http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/evillaugh.gif

It is a little slow, but that's to be expected. My sig has the gist of my 3 patrols so far with a link to my personnel file.

I'm on Patrol 4 right now sailing to BE39. North of Scapa Flow I ran into a 2,000 tonner, which I promptly sunk with a torpedo. A couple hours later found another 2,000 tonner, hit it with a torpedo but refused to sink, 20 shells from the deck gun fixed that. A few hours later the Watch Officer found another vessel. I went to the bridge and found myself on a collision course with a 10,000 tonner!:o Needless to say I promptly sunk it with two torpedoes, one under the smokestack and one under the forward mast.

Currently I'm NW of Scotland, heading for my assigned grid. Keep your eyes peeled, or have trusty watch crews, juicy targets are out there:up:

I just completed my first three patrols with GWX2.0 in a type II and had no problem finding targets. In fact on one patrol I sank 3 ships on the same day, and accumulated enough points to earn a type VII.

Matter of luck maybe?

I just came back from my 4th patrol and sunk 16 merchants, 3 warships, and 1 submarine. November/December 1939:up:

Plenty of targets out there! I got lucky and found a convoy of 13 merchants, a Southampton Class Cruiser, 2 escorts, and an S Class. Wiped the convoy clean:yep:

Same here. On my second patrol currently in transit to Wilhelmshaven in November 1939 having sunk 16 merchants for 96,203 GRT. Even my first patrol I bagged 50,000+ GRT. In the right place at the right time I suppose.

The tonnage is definitely out there....it's just a case (as it was in RL) of finding it http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
