hi all, i'm -sortof- new to the forums.. i lurk alot.. but in the next week or so i will be building a new computer and embarking on my first patrol in the pacific. the last silent hunter game i played was sh2 so i'm really looking forward to this greatly.
there was a small used book sale in our campus center today and as i was leaving after having found nothing so far i found a old copy of a book called Submarine! by Commander Edward L. Beach.. was wondering if anyone's heard of this book .. i guess the same other also wrote run silent run deep.. didn't know that : / .. but anyway the book looks pretty good. i guess the book i have was published c. 1953 by signet giants (for approx. .35 cents at the time!)
this book might have some info. modders can use for historical accuracy or ideas. just something i thought of.
well, regardless was just wanting to say hello and looking forward to sailing the seas with all of you : )

Welcome Aboard!
I just got that last month from the library and read it. A great book. What I really liked about it was the way he recreated the conversations the fire control party would have during an approach. Much more detail than other books I've read.

It's a WWII classic covering the U.S. Pacific submarine campaign. Any SH4 player that doesn't read it is missing out on what the war was really like.

Yup, great book. If you liked it, pick up Fluckey's Thunder Below. It is even better in my opinion.

Seconded. Thunder Below is my favorite book on the Pacific War.

Submarine Commander By Paul Schratz is another good read. Commander Schratz served as XO on several Fleet Boats, commanded the Japanese I-203 (IJN Electro-Boat version) after the War on its transit to Hawaii for evaluation and conducted war patrols off Korea during that conflict. Maps are included covering each of his various boat's war patrols. A very readable book and valuable resource for anybody interested in submarines.

Silent Victory is another great book by Clay Blair Jr. The appendixes are an awesome reference.

Submarine! is a very good book as it gives you an insight to more than one submarine during that period. As mentioned the crew interaction is described well.
I'm sure modders have referred to such books when researching prior to working on a mod.
Edward (Ned) Beach also wrote a book summarizing his "reflections" of his long career - "Salt and Steel". I had the good fortune to meet him at a Naval Submarine League meeting that I was blessed to be able to attend anually in Alexandria, VA. In addition to covering current events, they invited WWII submariners to attend and usually had a program event or two for them as well. That year (June 2001), I purchased his new book and had it personally autographed by CAPT (ret) Beach not too long prior to his death. Another great book for reference purposes is "Submarine Operations in WWII" by Theodore Roscoe and profusely illustrated by CDR Fred Freeman whose pen and ink drawings you've likely seen in many places. It is incredibly detailed and nearly 600 pages of 8.5" x 11" pages. It was out of print for decades after being published in 1949, but reprinted several years ago by the Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, MD.
All good choices. My current read is Spadefish: On Patrol with a Top-Scoring WW... (http://www.amazon.com/Spadefish-Patrol-Top-Scoring-WWII-Submarine/dp/1933177071/ref=pd_sim_b_title_1) by Stephen L. Moore. Well reasearched with input largely from interviews with enlisted crew. A lot of detail on day to day operations.
The one I am reading at the moment is The Bravest Man: Richard O'Kane and the Amazing Submarine Adventures of the USS Tang by William Tuohy. Also covers a lot of topics in brief, ideal probably for ideas for further research
Just finished Submarine! Excellent, good flavor of details. Calvert's Silent Running, Sterling's Wake of the Wahoo, and Fluckey's Thunder Below! are also first rate. Fluckey's I liked the best, because it was more like Captain Blood or Treasure Island than another sub story.
There are quite a few good WWII submarine books out there, Silent Victory by Clay Blair, US Submarines in WWII by Roscoe, and Dick O'Kane's two books are some of the best and are all worth reading. But the one that is the best by far is Thunder Below by Fluckey, at least in my opinion. Joe S
