There I was, headed nor'east just south of Boreno where I was told by orders to patrol in a 100nm radius and engage all I found.

It's early war and I'm putzin in a S ... suddenly "Ship Spotted Sir!" .... I start looking sure enough it's a small task force, two heavy cruisers and two DDs. I set a course for intercept and flank ahead. On the surface my sugar is making mebbe 11knots and it's high seas too.

After about 30 minutes of trying to head off the TF, I notice the DDs break formation and are headed straight for me. I stay surfaced as long as I can still running at flank.

Finally the DDs get a little too close for comfort as their bow guns are lobbing shells around my boat. I duck to PD and pop a decoy, then head for the thermal. I'm diving, still running flank ahead. The DDs buy the decoy and immediately I loose them to circling an area where they tought I was as they DCed every fish for 5 miles.

I'm still trying to close on the cruisers, but submerged, I'm only making 8 or 9 knots ... those cruisers are chugging away at 21.

Yeah I'm frustrated. I pop the surface and radio in the contact and I receive a return message ... "Inflict damage on the TF." I start muttering about command and how much they don't know ...
So I do a 180 and head for the DDs thinking that'll be my only chance of inflicting any damage. Yeah Right.

By this time an hour and a half has passed and the DDs realize that their duty to escort the cruisers is more important than trying to locate and bust me. Next thing I know both DDs are full throttle and heading east. I line up with hopes of hurtin someone ... It's not to be.

I'm frustrated ... (But lovin the hell out of it!)

First off those S-boats are slow AND noisy. Generally getting fast warships is next to impossible, except if they are up close and personal and it's still a longshot. I was in a Porpoise-class boat and did come across a similar TF. It was night and lucky for me I was in a good position but over 10000 yards away. So I went to 2/3 speed submerged and somehow got withinh 9000 yards for my Mk.14 torps. I sent 4 on the Light Cruiser. first 2 were duds, next 2 WHAMMO!

My advice to you in an S-boat is to use it's slowness to creep into enemy harbors at night (preferably) and sink to your liver's delight. Also when you see a TF maybe check the speed and if too fast ignore attack orders. You never know you may need your torps and fuel for something else. Good position relative to a TF is important.
