View Full Version : Patrol area too far away for US sub surely

Based at Midway I've been given my assignment to patrol the Skagerrak straight which lies between Norway and Sweden.:o Now how on earth am I supposed to get there - it is more than 6,000 odd nautical miles away. A return trip would be in the region of 14,000 to 15,000. This is like twice the distance to Japan!!

That's one hell of a glitch, or I'm a bearded elf!

Clearly, it is a one way suicide mission - you're not expected to return!
Thanks for volunteering :D

My thoughts exactly - someone in HQ clearly does not like me and would love to see me sail out over the horizon never to return. What I did was to accept the assignment sail out for about 100 miles and come back and dock on the pretext I'd forgotten something. :D This way I got a more realistic assignment.

That is strange for sure. What mods are you running that changes the campaign layers....if any mods at all?
Can you stop in NY for a refill and San Fran for a refill. No Panama Canal either. :shifty:

Brazil was an ally - and you'll want to warm up after Rounding the Horn, so you could stop in there. I would not recommend the northern route - even at your most economical submerged speed, you ain't going to make it (especially as it's already October for ya', oh, and the Arctic Ocean is essentially completely uncharted at this time, so you'd almost certainly bump into something, like a submerged mountain, under about 30ft of multi-year sea ice).

I got a similar assignment after completing TM's three new construction shake down missions. I transferred to Pearl and they wanted to send me up to Siberia or some nonsense. I always save the game when I am in port after I make mods and whatnot. So, I just reloaded and they gave me a realistic assignment.

Or you could sail to my Caribbean island but just watch out for Jerry, They're all over the place.:yep:

hey come on.... even i know machinists on a sub could knock up things from thin air.... just get em to make a few oars give em the crew and then it'll look like a scene from Hawaii 5 O, who needs fuel rofl :rotfl::rotfl:

Heck, the war will be over by the time you complete the mission...
So what is there to sink the North Atlantic anyway?
I'm pretty sure the Japanese didn't have too many ships there... or is the German Navy included in the game?

Those few American subs posted in Scotland to patrol the Atlantic were eventually withdrawn due to lack of targets. Sounds like somebody wants the original poster out of the way. Is somebody at HQ mad at you? ;)

Last time i was at Pearl I was hearing rumours about that thar skipper (married, thank you very much) and Rear Admiral English's daughter.
Perhaps not just wild gossip after all;)
P.s. How could you cheat your way out of accepting that mission? Orders are orders, sailor.

And since you're balmy enough to even consider going on that patrol, could you be so kind as to pick up some Swedish Meatballs for me in Stockholm?:yep::lol:

:hmm: Just quickly using Google Earth, sailing non-stop via Cape Horn, that would be about an 18,500 mile journey, which would take near 3 months at 9 knots (assuming clear weather). Where is the YYAAWWWNNN smiley when you need it.
Oh, and stock up on cans of spam in Hawaii on your way south - you're going to need it.
edit:
more like 16, 056 nautical miles, so still about 75 days, probably closer to 100 days given weather - make that 2 yyaawwnnns

I thought it was bad going from Hawaii to Thailand. I've had to abort that mission twice and reload due to fuel (will I ever complete???) but that one is ridiculous.

Yeah. Thailand should be for the Fremantle boats. Some of the deployment assignments make little geographical sense. The Skagerrak one still takes the cake tho.

Lol you would be nuts to even try to do that patrol.
Hawaii - Thailand is doable after refueling at Midway and on the way back 5-6000 miles.) The later fleet boats with good crew and weather can do 10-12,000 miles at typical long range surface cruise speed. No high speed chases on the way.

Ok.. that is weird.
I have no idea how this is happening. The subron 50 missions are not scripted into ANY flotilla except subron 50 out of holy loch.
Maybe i just need to remove it. I dont know.
If anyone else encounters this, i need to know the exact circumstances prior to getting an unwanted atlantic patrol assigment.
Edit:
I can tell by looking at the pics, this is on version 1.4 of sh4.
But what version of TM i is, i cant tell.
I don't know if this is related but typically when I transferred fleets; like PacFlt Pearl to SoWesPac and vice versa I'd get assigned to a former fleet patrol area on the first mission.
(this was in 1.4 ... I haven't transferred fleets in 1.5 yet) He transferred from SubRon50 to Pearl so seeing this makes sense. Others have mentioned this to me in stock - vanilla SH4.

DOH! :damn:
I forgot all about that. Acutally i didnt think anything of it. The game picks your next mission AS YOU DOCK on your current patrol. When you click "Dock at....." thats when th egame picks your next mission. So you end patrol, game assigns, and then you transfer..
yes, its not going to match. I guess im so used to looking at/ dealing with that, i never thought it worth mentioning.
