View Full Version : Something has gone horribly wrong with my game (but now it's fixed!)

Ok so tonight I load up my saved game to continue my career. I haven't changed a thing since the last time I played (about a week ago). Once the game finally loads I discover that the interior of the sub has completely changed. The instruments such as depth, batteries, fuel, etc are gone and everything just looks "weird." I tried taking all the mods out and still everything is messed up. I go to quick missions and war patrols trying different ones each time, and it is still messed up. So I finally decide to re-install the game, and again everything is messed up no matter what boat, condition, etc. I have truly exhausted everything I know how to look for so I ask this wonderful community to try and determine what the problem is so I can get back out on the seas and take down some convoys! Here are a couple screenies of the situation. Also note the weird lines in the sky on the external view. I would be eternally grateful to anyone who can point me in the right direction!

You say you stopped using the game, then tried again later... then this wierd display.
After a re-install (clean 1.4 patch) does it looks like this even when you start a new career? (Instead of loading your old game)

Yes it looks like this no matter what I do. Whether it be a quick mission/war patrol/career.

You haven't downloaded new vid card drivers or changed any of the anti-aliasing settings with something like nHancer by any chance?
I've got an Nvidia card (7900GS) and when I started screwing around nHancer and the AA settings, I got *exactly* the same thing. Had to tweak the settings and it went back to glorious old SH4 + ROW!!!
I'm almost certain you'll find it's video card settings related.

It's likely to be related to your grahics card, not SH4 itself.

Yup...try other games that are demanding. These kinds of graphicsproblems are mostlikely related to graphicscard breakdown or overheating. Check your fan for dust etc...
I just found the Similar sky problem in the SH3/SH4 settings for Nvidia cards thread - its a sticky. Have a look there

Thanks everyone for the help! I had changed some settings with nhancer as recommended in the first post of that thread. But I had made those changes before I started my last career and successfully completed two war patrols without any problems, so I'm not sure as to why there'd be a problem now. I made the change in the compatablility tab from "ea games compatable" to "general compatability" and this seems to have fixed the problem. I again thank everyone who replied for the help! Now it's time to get back to sinking some shipping!

Well, they're right, it's the 7900 acting a bit different from other video cards. Interestingly, the fix isn't what you're likely to be told. Using hHancer, use whatever settings yourself, I use Rubini's settings, with one change......pause whilst I call up nHancer and refresh my empty shell of a memory....it's on the Enhancements tab: check Enhance in-game AA setting. This uses the tweaks you select, but lets the game's routines do them. You'll lose the weird stuff and keep the upgrades from nHancer.
Making the change you did fixes the streaks and loses all the nHancer advantage. The EA games compatibility makes the nVidia card do AA everywhere instead of just in a limited area. You want that EA games compatibility active.

I had returned a 7600GT card to EVGA because of exploded electrolytic caps and they sent me back a 7900GS. Oh well, there goes my SLI. But checking showed that the 7900 alone would do about what SLIed 7600GTs would do so I could sell a card. OK! Then I fired it up and you guessed it! And everything worked perfectly except SH4, so I was going bonkers trying to figure it out. Then I got the same answer you did: fix the sky and step back in graphics quality. Many hours later, and lots of real entertaining views of the Pacific ocean that didn't correspond with reality, I finally came up with the fix.
