How to get a promotion ?

Over the past few years of playing silent hunter 3, I have only received one career rank promotion. Any suggestions?

im pretty sure promotions are based on total accumulated renown.

try to meet all objectives and sink a lot of ships without spending your renown on nonessential upgrades to the boat or nonessential crew

How much total accumulated renown. I have had over 45,000 and still stuck at the lower Lt Rank.
