After 5 patrols and 5 big fat nulls I'm finally a true Kaleun.

I think my lack of success was part bad luck (2 impacts w/duds!) and partly just needing more experience with OLC's GUI to get to the point where i'm fast enough with it to get a solution in time and make sure it's accurate.

February 1940, still in my type iia, we start patrol 6 enroute an21. The crew morale was tanked. Ahead 1/3rd. We make it to AN21 without incident and immediately detect a large convoy nnw of us heading sse :)

I miss judge my space & time a little and end up 10km off their port beam. I hit flank speed and set a parrallel course to get ahead. Destroyer comes out of nowhere undetected (crew morale?) and puts 2-3 shells into us before we crash dive. I dive at flank down to 45m (50m depth) then go silent and turn to starboard 45 degrees and manage to elude.

So i get away and flank the convoy and set up this time to attack from their starboard beam. I go undetected at peri depth and watch as one by one the massive Finnish, Dane, & Norwegian cargo vessels sail on by :(

Grrrrr.

18 hours later, another convoy. This time i set up at 80m depth, let the escorts by and put 2 torps into a Emperor Class Vessel from 800m :) Having only one torp left without reloading I decide to keep hold of it and manage to elude the ensuing DC attack yet again.

The next day i end up sinking 2 tramp steamers, elude 2 air attacks on the way home, and at last Dock at Kiel victorious.

Being killers, I finally authorized the painting of the 1st flotilla badge on the tower.

It was a long and frustrating learning curve, but ultimately just that much more rewarding when finally successful on full realism.

I appreciate all the help i got from you guys getting me here!

Good work!

OLCs GUI takes a bit of practice, but after a few sinkings you will be an expert!

Congrats

Glad to hear you decided to stick with the GUI long enough to get used to it. :ping:

As it happens, today I updated the FAQ with info about torps missing aft of target. Thought I'd mention it in case it helps.

Your game is that excitet like mine :) I sink one ship too, and read lots of books. Patrol in realtime is long, very long...
