View Full Version : A couple of questions for you guys

Back into a bit of SH4, can't get away from my love of submarines.

Along with this community and how far the mods have evolved since I took a break, looks like I'll be hanging around for a while. Ethier here or FSX, the simulator communities are something else.

Two questions

1) When I'd return from patrol and check the Captian's Log on my desk in my office, every entry would have the same date. Kind of a stupid bug, I can't really go over my past patrols and see how the time passed. This was 1.3 though and I've just installed 1.4, will that fix it? Have you guys fixed it otherwise?

2) I don't mean to pry, but what happened to Dave Bunnell? I see lots of respect for him on this forum.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

I believe 1.4 solved the problem with the dates in the captains log book as i've not seen this problem with my install (however it could be mod dependent) who knows.

Dave Bunnell unfortunately passed away at the begining of January.

RSRDC can be run with TM and NSM4 just pick the right version.... TM 1.7.6 RSRDC NSM4 i always put NSM on last just incase other mods alter the zones.

Thanx for that info on the log DrBeast i'll look see :)

1) Unfortunately, the bug still persists. There was a fix posted some days ago, but I'm afraid I don't even remember the thread title to go look it up for you.
2) Dave aka Leovampire passed away almost a month ago. He had been suffering from heart attacks and strokes for quite some time. He was a great modder and even greater person. You can check out his mod Reflections On the Water (ROW for short) in the SH4 Modshop stickies.

ETA: Taurolas, in order to see the bug, save the game when you're homeward bound (a few miles before hitting port), and enter port. Your entries will probably be corrrect. BUT...reload and dock again, and the entries will be all scrambled up.
ETA #2: Oh, welcome to Subsims, m3thuselah!
ETA #3: FSX eh? Funny that you mentioned it...I started playing that game a week or so ago. Unfortunately, some mod I downloaded has garbled up the application and I have to reinstall :damn:

Cheers, I'll have to try and find that fix.

Another quick one, how does Run Silent, Run Deep actually change the career missions to make them more realistic? Can I run it with Trigger Maru and Natural Sinking Mechanics? Would the install order be TM first, then NSM and then RSRD? I've only ever played Vanilla but I really want to spice it up with some of these great mods.

I assume for best results I should re-install SH4, install 1.4 patch and then install the three mods. Yeah?

edit: Thanks for the welcome, DrBeast. Long time reader, first time poster. FSX is great, thier mod community is the only thing I've seen that can compete with Silent Hunter's!

Details on how to properly install RSRDC is on the mod's first page, in the very first post, as well as what it does. Highly recommended mod, for sure. NSM runs fine with RSRDC, dunno how it behaves with TM though.
ETA: Theoretically, if you have a vanilla game, all you need to do is install patch 1.4. This is no Medieval 2: Total War, you don't need to reinstall the game to install a new patch! :rotfl:

Should work with TM, just install after Trigger. Also make sure that any mods after NSM do not overwrite anything.

@ m3thuselah, welcome to SUBSIM . By the way, Dave was an awesome guy, as great as his mods were\are, he was even better as a person.

I've gotten my PC all ready to crank some mods, I'm going to install them tonight once I get home.

I've noticed TM comes with a version of ROW. My framerates have just gotten to a good place with the 1.4 and much tweaking, I'm wondering how much ROW will rape them. I know when I actually sail into Pearl Habour it's going to suck, but I want to be able to stand on the bridge and the mouse not feel like it's moving through honey.

My PC doesn't suck, just a couple of generations old. Dual core AMD @ 2.4Ghz, 2 Gigs of RAM and a 7900GT does just fine with the vanilla game. Will ROW leave my PC in a whimpering pile and frustrate me?

Holy crap, that's a lot of screwing around.

As if Ubisoft let the product ship with such a massive bug. I was thinking about it, but that's really the whole trick. Massive publishers like EA and Vivendia aren't going to take a chance on a niche game genre like a submarine simulator. They'll do a dumbed down version where you can't die from diving too deep and every torp explodes for the masses, but won't risk annoying the retard demographic with anything realistic.

So we get stuck with Ubisoft. Guess we should be happy we've got a Silent Hunter at all..

No it won't. Just stay away from the hi-res sea-foam, it's quite demanding.

How do I do that?

I loaded up the game tonight for the first time with TM + RSRD + NSM. 'Wow' is all I can say. Absolutely amazing.

I as I was quiting to go to bed I had to stop as the gramaphone started playing the classic 'whos on first' skit. My first patrol I'll have to load from a save game, I've run out of fuel looking for ships! The radio messages are immersive and interesting. With the lack of spamming contact reports and the planes every 2 seconds I'm starting to get a funny feeling.. like I'm sailing across the Pacific Ocean.

Incredible work from all involved. So glad I've waited this long and all three of these mods have matured so much.

TMaru involves the bulk of ROW in its latest version. I haven't checked to see if it incorporates any seafoam parts of ROW, though. As you may have noticed, ROW is modular: each aspect of the mod is available as a separate download. Now, notice under Sea Foam, there are a few versions available. If you feel your machine can't handle it, don't get the Hi-Res sea foam. Kriller2 has done an amazing job, but they're not for us poor fellas with weakling machines. I personally use Jaketook's version. For extra immersion, I recommend Fred8615's amazing Radio Mods. You can find them in the 1.4 Patch Compatible Mods List in SH4 Workshop, right here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=126875).
