View Full Version : How often U-boats report their status to BdU?
Hello.
Anybody knows how often, during the war, the commanders need send raport to BdU (for example: every 3 days?)
And how often you raporting yourself in game?

They were expected to report weather and status every day. 'Onkel Karl' liked to micromanage. It made it easy for the Allies to know what was going on.
I only call in contact reports. Does the game let you do anything else? I do make patrol logs, and record that I called in every day, but that's just for my personal satisfaction.

I send a "Status report"
I have changed the status report reply message from "Press the attack" / "Keep up the good work" so that it now reads:
If no targets sunk: "Your position report has been received, Report back within twenty four hours, Unfortunately we have no contact reports relevant to your area of operations at this time... Good hunting!"
If targets have been sunk: "Your report has been received and is being relayed to the appropriate intelligence departments for analysis, Good Hunting!
If no torpedoes remaining: "Report received, having expended your primary offensive weaponry, you may return to base or report to the nearest resupply vessel at your discretion."
Sending a contact report: "Your contact report has been received and is being forwarded to kriegsmarine units in your operational area. Attack targets when able, do not await reinforcements! Good Luck!"
What file depend for this messages?

Well thanks to reece i just learned this yesterday.
Go to your data folder, and locate your menu folder, open the file called "en_menu", it will open in "notepad" go to the format tab of notepad and disable "wordwrap" and scroll down to the line of text within the file which reads:
4196=Contact report received. Good work!
4197=Press the attack!
4198=Keep up the good work!
4199=Return to base!
Without editing any of the numbers or "=" signs you may change the text to read whatever you wish the reply of BDU to be.
I have modified my file so that it now reads: (do not include quotation marks)
4196=Contact report received. Your report is being forwarded to kriegsmarine units in your operational area. Attack targets when able, do not await reinforcements!
4197=Position report received. Submit a new report within twenty four hours. Unfortunately we have no contact reports relevant to your area of operations at this time to assist you in locating the enemy! We will forward you such information as it becomes available.
4198=Your report has been received and is being forwarded to the appropriate intelligence departments for analysis, Good Hunting!
4199=Report Received. Having expended your primary offensive weaponry, you may return to base or refit at the nearest resupply vessel at your discretion!
You can edit the messages to say whatever you want if you dont wish to use mine... but keep in mind
4196=(this message should be the reply to a contact report which you have sent)
4197=(this message should be the reply to a status report that indicates you have not yet sunk any targets)
4198=(this message should be the reply to a status report that indicates you HAVE sunk at least one target)
4199=(this message should be the reply to a status report which indicates you are out of torpedoes)

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Menu
Open the en_menu if playing in English
4196 onwards
thanx, this is much better like "Press the attack!".

There's a section on the Commander's Handbook saying that when shadowing a convoy, a U-boat should report in every hour!
BdU really wanted its assets' locations to be picked up by the tommies!:dead:

Do you mind if I nip yours and use them? I rather like them. :)
Wow, that's such a great idea! I'm gonna use that too now :yep:

Me as well Golden Rivet! The standard messages are a bit dull aren't they?

by all means feel free to use them... i considered asking if they might just copy paste them into GWX2.1 but i figured the time had long since come and gone for such ideas.

heres what I got:
4196=Contact report received, well done on your find! Forwarding enemy location to all alvailable units in the vicinity. Attack if you are able to, do not wait.
4197=Status report received, maintain patrol. Information on enemy movements will be forwarded as it comes up.
4198=Status report received. Good work commander, maintain your patrol and move to areas of known enemy activity at your discretion. Report any further contacts with the enemy.
4199=Understood Commander. Return to base! Prepare U-Boat logs for submission at debriefing following your return. Safe journey home!

I have run into a slight snag though... it seems that when i launch SH3 through SH3 commander. the en_menu file gets changed back to the default.
Ill experiment a bit

I could wish there was a way the game would respond when your boat has had the living snot beat out of it and is being held together with chewing gum and baling wire. Something like: "Abort patrol and return to nearest base ASAP. Escort will be provided if at all possible."
There's nothing like being down the south tip of Africa with a full load of torps, getting DC'ed by an airplane, and winding up with destroyed elecric motors, one destroyed diesel, both 'scopes destroyed . . . and getting a 'Press the attack!' message in reponse to your patrol report.

ok... does anyone have any ideas here?
when i change the en_menu file to my taste and run SH3 the messages work normally
When i change the en_menu file to my taste and run SH3 via SH3 Commander the messages revert back to the default "Press the attack" etc... there must be another file or En_menu file SH3 Commander accesses before loading SH3. :hmm:

Oh dear... I was getting rather excited at the prospect of spicing up those reply messages, but I too use SH3Commander. Please do let us know if you find a solution.
Great idea BTW.
If only there was a Captain's Log Book we could manually update, or notes we could write on our maps. Ah well, I guess that's why pencils and paper still exist.

Hmmm, when SH3 Commander loads it adds the line "Loaded via SH3 commander" to the en_menu file and saves it.
if i can locate where SH3 Commander stores and loads this text, i might be able to solve the problem.
GoldenRivet

The file called "SH3 Options.cfg" located in...
C:program files/SH3 Commander/CFG/SH3 Options.cfg
has to be changed so that it either has the "Loaded via SH3 Commander" text removed or it includes the desired messages text so the "en_menu" file is not changed when SH3 Commander is loaded.
when i attempt to do this the CFG is saved as a text file and renders SH3 useless (fortunately i backed up the original file and have since restored it)
any takers?
Just add the messages into commander by adding en_ to the front of them in the [TEXTSETTINGS] section.
GoldenRivet

ok seems to be working now.
1. Rollback SH3 Commander
2. run SH3 via SH3 commander once
3. Exit SH3
4. Close SH3 Commander
5. Change the en_menu file to your liking
6. Run SH3 via SH3 Commander
and it should work until your next rollback.
Changes made during a patrol will not be reflected in the game.

tried that... when i close the file it says "Could not specify path ensure that the path is correct" yadda yadda yadda
when i double check the path it comes up with some nonsense about how i am not allowed to edit this file.
i saved the file to desktop hoping to just move and replace the existing CFG file... when i do this none of the buttons on SH3 commander work except the "close" button

Only if contact with a large convoy is entailed, otherwise this cappie keeps his ship quiet.

Is the AI capable of pinpointing your location by intercepting radio messages? I know it happened a lot IRL for sure, but, the usual question: Is this modelled???:hmm:

I'm not sure how accurate the information relayed is, but yes, your radio transmission does divulge your position. It's rather uncanny how closeby they are when you first get wind of their presence in the area.

I went two or three days in 1943 without sighting an aircraft or receiving one radar warning...
sent in a position report and within an hour i was attacked by mosquito bombers
Coincidence?
i have my doubts!

@ GoldenRivet and Penelope Grey: Your 'replies' are very nice, but I'd hate to be the radioman who had to send them. I only had to use the telegraph key and Morse code once, but it was awful. I'll keep mine short, thanks.
On a side note, one of the missions in SH2 had a message which read: "Chief Hinkle's wife says new submarine has arrived in port. Unit has a periscope."

they are long indeed... i would have hated to send the personal messages from Karl to his front line commanders in which he congratulates them on their success and informs them that they will have a knights cross waiting when they get back yadda yadda yadda :rotfl:

In reading your replies, it seems you have an actual Commander's Handbook. Do you? And where did you get it?
Thanks,
