View Full Version : Wrestling - Your favourite era?

One day in our lives, each of us has watched a wrestling program. Admit it. We might've been flicking through the channels in the 70's, and stopped momentarily and watched Hulk Hogan defeat the Iron Sheik for the World Championship. We might've flicked it on in the 80's to watch the the 'Million Dollar Man' Ted DiBiase spin his yarn about how he could buy anyone in professional sports, or Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan having his infamous quarrels with Gorilla Monsoon at the commentator's table. Or we might've flicked it on in the 90's, and watched Stone Cold Steve Austin drive a monster truck over The Rock's brand new Lincoln Continental, or watched the Undertaker's 'Ministry of Darkness'

Regardless of your opinions of the sport, those moments are one's that stick with you.

My question to you is, which era was best?

I wont hide it, I think the older times were the best. Listening to Bobby Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon commentate a match was pure comedic genius.

Bobby H & Gorilla on Tito Santana:
Bobby H: Did you know Tito holds a place in Guiness' Book of World Records?
Gorilla: Yeah? For what?
Bobby H: He picked 1,600 heads of lettuce in 1/2 an hour.
Gorilla: Will you stop!!

Nah...take it in all good fun.

I can remember a bunch of us kids going to a friends house who had enough money for pay per view in the '80s and watching Summerslam or Wrestlemania.

It was a pipe dream for us in elementary school to watch a classy dressed Elizabeth with Macho Man Randy Savage. OOOHHHH....made me so mad how he treated her. Hey...that's showbiz.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Last time I ever saw any Wrestling or heard much about it was the 80s with the Hulkster! :D
Saw a bit in the 90s with Stone Cold Steve Austin. :D That was quite cool, I agree it's all a show these days, but they do know how to put on a good show.

I thought it was fun to watch when I was in HS in the 80's. Of course we all knew it was fake, that actually was part of the fun of watching it. It was almost like a parody of a real wrestling league. Very campy and kinda lighthearted.

I loved watching monologues between Bobby "The Brain" Heenan and one of his wrestlers. Whenever the wrestler was responding to Bobby you could see Bobby mouthing the words of the script right along with him; it was so funny.

The Hulk with his typical come from behind super-human turn around victory (every match) whereby the crowd would somehow endow him with power from beyond.

...and of course, my favorite, "The Macho Man" Randy Savage... I'd just laugh outloud everytime that guy talked.

Yeah, those were the good ole days... Nowadays it's like a mix between softcore porn and tales from the darkside. It's just not something I can let my kids watch.

Have you seen Wrestlemania 9, when Savage, Heenan and JR were on the commentating team? The entire event is priceless.

Macho Man: Shut up, Heenan!
Bobby: Shut up, Ross!

Dunno if there are any Aussie 70's WCW devotees around but these names might ring a few bells for those that are:

Jack Brisco, Bobby Shane, Andre the Giant, Killer Karl Kox, Tex McKenzie, Les Thornton, Abdullah the Butcher, Waldo von Erich and Don Fargo, Killer Kowalski, Ray Stevens, Dominic Denucci, Mark Lewin, Mario Milano, Spiros Arion, Karl Gotch, Bruno Sammartino, Pepper Gomez, Gorilla Monsoon and many others.
