View Full Version : Hiroshima Harbor Photo Op

:damn: What a great sim this is! One issue I have similar to the Yokohama scenario is getting anywhere near Hiroshima let alone halfway through the inlet. I have carefully charted the depth and distances as I go but even in the deeper troughs when sitting on the bottom all-stop / rigged-for-silent / I still get dc'd. Now, maybe it's just me being all Hollywood but I figure in this situation the destroyer should not "see" me with that era's technology as I would be seen as ocean geography. Any ideas? The other odd thing I noticed is that ALL 4 destroyers leave the convoy for hours and hours trying to find and dc my boat. This seems counter to most tactical doctrine--if there were two subs the convoy would be completely exposed. ANYWAY, I would like to complete the photo op but am very frustrated. Just hate to blow it off even though it is 300+/- points. Any ideas on the Hiroshima leg would be helpful.

Are you running silent? There's a good post on sonar and detection in the SHIII forum that covers technology, depth, and profile as factors in being detected.

I've lost 2 subs trying to do that stupid, f&^%$$g mission.
I got assigned it as a third objective on my last patrol and just ignored it. One was Dec '44 so I was extreeeemly upset.

It certainly seems to me that in both SH3 and SH4, any destroyer that gets within about 300-400 yards of you automatically detects you. They find me if I'm moving or if I'm stationary. I can be sitting on the bottom with silent running on, pointing directly at them, and they'll stll pick me up. Keep your distance.

WELCOME ABOARD, jack23011:sunny:
They should have more trouble finding you when you lie on the bottom. Also, the sand should absorb some of the shock, making it easier for you to survive. On the other hand, they shouldn't be assigning you recon missions in Japanese harbors, and shallow water and air patrols should make it nearly impossible to get in and out of them, or even near them.

I was thinking the same thing about the mission. Running a Gato Class to photograph Hiroshima harbor seems a bit of a one way trip regardless of running up under night time or day time conditions. The stock ocean geography while pretty to look at isn't accurate. As you approach the middle inlet to harbor I should think there would be MORE sand not larger rocks and more of them. Thanks to all for the tips and sympathy...

Hi jack23011 :D
That's a tough mission. I like to save those in my Hard Missions file I created, and go back at a later time and try it over and over until I succeed to see what works and what doesn't.
I guess I don't like to lose.:smug:
