I have been reading these forums to get an idea of what SHIV is like. According to the tracking # my copy will be here tomorrow. So I can't even call myself a beginner, because I haven't begun yet....:lol:
I have already d/l the 1.4 patch, but I figure I will wait for a bit before adding MODS. Just so I don't run into any problems caused by not installing them properly.
This seems like a good group willing to help beginners and I appreciate that, I just hope I don't become a pain the backside with questions.
I have already found a lot of useful info on this site, and I even used a free program called Cutepdf Writer to save some of them (because I know I won't be able to remember where to find them) Just wanted to say hello. Also, I want to say I am very sorry to hear of the loss of Dave Bunnell, one of your modders. He seems to have been very well liked and a BIG loss to the community.

I've taken the liberty of making a reservation for you over at WASSAT (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118923), the WernerSobe Advanced School of Submarine Attack Tactics, where you can learn how submarines set up and attack their targets with full manual settings. However, I'd recommend you set phasers to "wimpy" for awhile and learn to handle your boat.

That way you can learn to stalk the targets and when you get close, just put the target in the crosshairs and push fire. Knowing the underlying principles from Werner's movies will make the process much more enjoyable.

Be advised that adding Reflections on the Water early-on will not make your game more difficult, just more beautiful, and the same goes for Natural Sinking Mechanics. I would heed AVG's advice and play the game naked (preferrably with a friend:p, you know, a first mate) until you can appreciate what these great mods bring to the table.

Leave some targets for us and don't hesitate to ask questions!

Thank you, but the WASSAT links at filefront don't seem to work.

I did find the d/l for ROW because I was reading about it last night and those links are ok. Also I just checked and the Natural Sinking Mechanics are there (and d/l ed) I also have the JSGME which I assume I need??? But when I click the WASSAT page links it just goes to the main Filefront page...no download.
Ok, first question: I am a 'little' conserned about my video cards ability (Geforce 7600GS 256MB) Will these mods make it worse if it has trouble with getting good settings? I am coming from Falcon 4 Allied Force which is an old game that has been updated over the years but it relies heavily on the CPU and RAM and very little on the video card, But SHIV is just the opposite. In fact with Falcon, I can HOST an online game with multiple players (basically using my machine as a "server") and act as Teamspeak server at the same time, because the video card is not a big issue with those programs.
And which order should they be installed? (I have read that some mods need to be installed in a certain order)

And don't worry, there will be LOTS of target left, but you may not have any Subs left, so you may want to get some rowboats ready!!:roll: Headline: DAY 3 Peabody attacks Japenese Navy with a rowboat and rocks. This is going to be a big change for me going from an F-16 with afterburner at 500 Knots to a Sub at 15 knots. Maybe I can learn to MOD and put in an afterburner in the sub?

Again thanks for the info, I will d/l the ROW stuff now so I will have it.

You should be fine with your video card to play at medium to high settings, as long as your CPU and RAM are up to spec. I run SH4 with a 6200 card on medium low settings without a problem!:yep: May not have all the nice effects but it's still pretty good!

Thanks for the info, the video card is the part I was a bit worried about. UPS is suppose to be delivering the game tomorrow, but we had a big storm today. Not a lot of snow but a lot of bad visibility so I hope it gets to the delivery truck on time.

I found the link to test and was a bit above recommended on the card so tomorrow I will find out. The rest is no problem, I have a Pentium D 3.4mhz dual core, Ram is 2 GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800mhz running in Dual Channel mode (That was full bars on the test) Motherboard has 800mhz FSB. The test did suggest a new driver for the video card so I installed that.

I have a question for you, since this sim is based in the Pacific in the war against Japan maybe you can help me out: Why did Kamikaze pilots wear helments? Isn't that a waste of money?
I think the patience is the one thing I am going to have to get used to. I am used to flying long distances for missions, but not at 15 knots ;) And when I would fly a night mission and watch two SA-10s lift off (They are surface to air missiles for those who don't know) and they have a range of about 100 Km, very fast, you can't outrun them so it is over in seconds. It will be a big change to hide from a destroyer quietly for a long time, cause I am used to it being over in seconds one way or the other.
Either I evade the missles or I hit the silk. Oh, BTW, do these subs come with parachutes?
I just checked UPS and my Sub is "Out for Delivery" should be here this afternoon. (I sure hope they remembered to install the screen door I asked for!)
Well, Thank you all for the nice welcomes!! I agree with DJFL it IS refreshing to see a forum where people get along and are helpful, I am so used to seeing noobs ask question and get 10 of the same answers..."READ THE MANUAL"

As I prefered to start the game I started with the automatic aiming to get a first feeling how the angle and all the other nescessairy stuff has to be set up. And after some time I deactivated more and more so I could gain mor control over my sub.
But the way of learning is a book that everyone has to write for himself.

Well, I got through Sub School by the skin of my teeth. On the last mission I used auto lock for the torps until I figure this out. I headed for the convoy but was mixed up on speed. The manual said "Ahead Slow" which I thought was 1/3. The radarman kept telling me they were going away. So I steped it up to 2/3 and heard "Ahead Slow", so I realized my mistake and the convoy got by, so I stepped up to Standard. well, at first I missed the merchants but the escorts found me with no problem. One way turning toward me, do I couldn't get a good lock. So I waited for him to finish his turn and head straight for me. I know a bow shot is not the best, but at least he was on a steady course, so I took the shot, they dropped my scope and turned hard to port. As soon as I had turned 90 degrees, I raised the scope and see a Battleship (I think that's what it was...didn't ID it) broadside to me. So, let one go from the stern tubes. Then the bow shot hit, then the stern shot hit and down he went. And along came the other two. I got both of them but then I had to chase down the convoy. Got one, the second took two hits but didn't sink, and I needed to sink both to "win" so I went after him with the deck gun because I was out of torpedos. Got him but took some damage myself. I wouldn't have done that in a "real" mission, I had three merchants shooting at me.

Ya, I can see where this is going to be fun!

Thanks to all for the help and encouragment, I have already run in to some stuff I may need to ask questions about. But for now I need to get to bed. It's 3 AM. OOOPs.

Tomorrow I will try to get the shooting solution manually. If I don't run out of subs.

I have one advice for you - remember to use the "Q" key..... :smug:
Are you a mind reader? Believe it or not that is the FIRST thing I looked up this morning. Honest. I knew you could open the doors ahead of time from watching some of the video tutorials from here; but wanted to jump into the game to make sure it would run on my machine. But I noticed it took quite a while to get a topedo fired. So I looked it up this morning.
And, believe it or not your second suggestion was on my mind. I was thinking I should just try it with no mods to see what settings I can use and how my computer handles it, then I would know if the mods cause any problems or slowdowns. And the mods that make it more realistic, I am not ready for. I think, when I'm ready the first two will be ROW and NSM. Only because they don't make the game harder to play. I have a lot to learn especially the manual targeting (I guess in Subs it's "fireing solution")
In the sub school I had the most trouble with the AA guns. I would hit but the planes would fly around for 10 minutes on fire (both wings on the larger ones....They should have gone Boom by then.) The zeros.. I only hit a couple. Deck gun ....no problem, just more practice.
One thing that did confuse me at first (and I am going to jot things down as I go, and compile a list of things maybe other noobs may have trouble with. Some things that people who have played a lot take for granted) Well, as I started to say, At first I was confused with the bearing numbers in the periscope. At first I thought it was an actual heading, so if I looked at a ship at 250 degrees, I though I would have to turn to 250 to intercept thinking it was linked to a compass or radar, but then when I looked at the wheel to change headings I realized that didn't make sense and it was a bearing from my ship to target and had nothing to do with actual heading. and then when I realized my bow was always at 0 degrees, the light bulb came on. duh!

I do have a question: What is the reason for having a tageting periscope and an observation scope? I would think if you put up a scope you would want to be ready to shoot, just in case.
EDit: one other thing I haven't found yet, how do you show FPS.

Peabody

Sailor Steve

The observation scope is for just that - observing. It has a wider field of view and lets in more light, but is also bigger and easier to spot. It also cranks up to 85 degrees, so it's main use is for looking around for ships and planes before you surface, as well as tracking the enemy while submerged.

Your first step is to try SH4 1.4 without mods - that is highly recommended, to get a feel for the game

Hehehehe

Your not the first to wonder why it takes sooo long to shoot the torpedoes, and its not that well documented, but very essential ;)
