I've just started my second campaign (this time starting in the Asiatic fleet with an S-18 ... boy was I glad to get rid of that piece of junk!), and I've got a question on the triggering mechanism for torpedoes. It seems to me that early on in the war (~1942) the contact influence setting is much more reliable than the contact setting on Mark 14's. In fact, it seems like they default to the "influence" setting early in the war, while later on the default is "contact."
Is contact influence actually more reliable early in the war? If so, it's a little frustrating shooting them off in rough seas, since they explode so easily in harsh weather. At what point do contact-only torpedoes become more reliable?
