View Full Version : What is wrong with SH4.....
As I said in the past I only have a few mods loaded and I want to get to the end of the war before I load any other mods. But since I have been on 17 patrols and have 420000 tonnes of shipping I have found the following defects in SH4.
1. I can attack any port with impunity. Only 2 times has there been a subchaser or air attacks while torpedoing ships at port.
2. I have yet to come into a port that has major Japanese Warships except Subchasers and Gunboats.
3. I am going to try Tokyo Bay and see if anything is there.
4. I hope the new mods have more activity at the ports where Merchants are.
5. I have only run into major warships in taskforces that are traveling at high speeds so I can't setup for shots.

So did the skippers in real life. Few exceptions of light ships patrolling.
2. I have yet to come into a port that has major Japanese Warships except Subchasers and Gunboats.
There was only so many battleships to go around. Besides, there is a war out there. Sitting in port does them no good.
3. I am going to try Tokyo Bay and see if anything is there.
Probably not and the submarines did not venture in to the bay during the war.
4. I hope the new mods have more activity at the ports where Merchants are.
Maybe some more merchants and few more active ports then stock.
5. I have only run into major warships in taskforces that are traveling at high speeds so I can't setup for shots.
Many a task force blew on by the submarines.
I see no faulty parts of the game in this respect.
Sounds like you have a traitor aboard.. radioman maybe.
I've seen some nice vessels in port (Ise battleship, T3 tanker.. whas very hard to get that 1, she took 10 torp's before starting to list and another 4hr to sink

Ah yes the old realisim vs gameplay quandry.
You think your frusterated how do you think the real life skippers felt ?

Think of it this way... 420,000 tons is about the combined total of the top 5 real skippers of the war. Not a bad haul from that perspective.
Avgwarhawk,
You are right on all counts. But I sure would like to find one port with at least a cruiser or destroyer at dock. Also, I would like to see some activity from the Subchasers and Gunboats when I sink Merchants. But, then again, I sink the subchaser first and then the gunboat before moving on the Merchants.
Do you feel the aircraft activity is a little over done. Sometimes just too many.
Still enjoying the game. Anyone else play to the end yet ?

Furthest I got was Dec '44. Lost the USS Gar trying to sneak into Hiroshima (stupid Photo mission)
Current career Uss Grunion/USS Balao upto Nov '43 so fingers crossed.
I use TM176 + RSRD campaignlayers + NSM mods. I find SH4 fairly balanced now between "real" and "game". I did manually edit the aircraft.cfg (or something like that) in the ../data/cfg folder to bring down the amount of aircraft encountered. It'ss very easy to do.

I'm in the fall of 1944 and really hate to see it end. Hey! That's another unrealistic part! In the real war they were very relieved to see it end, sometimes even to the point of letting targets live a couple of hours before the peace was declared. Not only is the game flawed, so am I!:damn:

I made it to Jan 45 once. I was in the Sea of Japan and just got hammered by some ace dd's. I sank three of the dd's but ran out of fish. The last one wore me out.
I had to blow the ballast to keep from dying and took the last one out with the deck gun. (yeah right:roll: ) I limped out, unable to even dive to PD. As the sun came up the next morning, there was little progress on the hull damage and then the inevietable: The planes came. We got the first three but eventually ran out of ammo and well, down goes Fraiser.:dead:

It sounds like you are playing the game unmodded. Check out what the other players are using. These mods help in the game play you do not care for. So, you are not alone when it comes to harbor traffic and whacked amount of aircraft:up:

Not at all. If you're spotted by a plane, they will send more after you. The Japanese historically used a lot of planes for aerial ASW.

Well, we all play to the end. It's just the end sometimes comes sooner than we'd like.
