View Full Version : Type II fuel!?

When I first started playing SH3 it didn't take me long to work out that I could start the war in Sept 39 in a Type VII if I wanted to, and thereafter I never looked back to the Type II... until now. I just started a new GWX2 career (Sept 39, as always) in a Type IIA in Kiel (1st Flotilla). I was assigned to grid AN21 (Lerwick Sub Base). Nice and close! :) So I go through the Kiel canal at ahead one third, and proceed directly to my patrol zone at the same speed with no interruptions. Upon my arrival there, my crew report: "Diesel fuel reserves down to 50% sir"
WHAT!? :o
It took me half my fuel to get here sailing in a straight line!? And that was in perfect weather mind you! WTF?
I've read in these forums that people do play using Type II's. My question is simple: HOW?

I am currently in AN01'85, N'W of Edinburgh, been on station for 36 hours and still have about 60% of my fuel left. I did leave from Wilhelmshaven having refueled there before this second patrol.
Going through the Kiel canal usualy at a speed of 6'Kts would usually take up around 11% of my fuel (3 notches on the guage) anyhow.
Its one of the things I like about the Type II is that you have to constantly monitor your fuel just like a commander would have done.
Another thing is if you get a contact report or hear a contact on hydrophones you have to think very carfully before going off at flank speed to intercept. Fuel is precious!
I find a speed of, as Penelope Grey says, 6'Kts to give best fuel economy vs, speed or alternativly 5'Kts or even 4'Kts once you are off the coast of Britain.
I reacon I will only be able to remain on station for two or three days at best but since I have sank one ship already therefore im sure I will get another in the bag before returning! Thats if I dont get jumped by the Royal Navy... the weather is poor, visibility poor, and the Firth of Forth is a dangerous place...! I narrowly escaped a Vosper last night! :p
Good Hunting :arrgh!:

Yep Kpt. Otto, bang on!
6 knots is your magic number OLC. Slow and steady. 6knots gives the best fuel economy out of the type II's (A and D)

I'm a type II lover at heart... but I actually prefer the IIA. Is it possible to edit the range of the IIA at all? Perhaps by going into the .cfg files? I'm only asking becauyse, once in there, I only know how to do VERY BASIC mods. Any help would be appreciated. :ping:

It's funny that the game models the IIA and not the IIB, as there were only six IIAs and the IIB had much better range.

Also interesting is that the Type II's real-life best range was at eight knots.

Thanks for the info guys (and girl).
At the start of my very first patrol, while entering the Kiel canal (fair weather) I interrogated :arrgh!: my nav officer for max range after my sub attained certain speeds. The following are the averages I got:
1 kts : 1157 km
2 kts : 1960 km
3 kts : 3017 km
4 kts : 4133 km
5 kts : 5133 km
6 kts : 5919 km
7 kts : 4565 km
I didn't try speeds higher than that because I didn't want to beach my sub in the canal. Also, it was clear 6 knots was the best speed for range. Any other speed only makes you thirsty (it's a really odd curve imho). Since the 'ahead one 3rd' is about 7.4 kts (according to "NSS_Uboat2A.cfg" in the Submarine/NSS_type folder: 0.57*max speed (13)) you'll see the reduced range you got makes sense.

Whenever I start from Kiel in a type IIA, I always go at 5 knts through the Keil canal and stay at that speed until im past Heligoland. I then set my speed to 6-7 Knts, submerging for about 10 hrs. This way I can get to Scapa Flow and back with just enough fuel left.
Failing that, you could just head back to Heligoland, and start you next patrol from there.

Yes you are right... it is odd the way they have modeled a mixture of the type IIa and the type IIc/d.
The type IIa doesnt have a second periscope either they only introduced that on the type IIc and type IId. In my game I just ignore the use of the second scope altogether.
In game ive never really thought about the fuel range, just got on with it. But now as I am in U-23, in real life it was a type IIb then I might go in and change the amount of fuel to reflect the realities of the U-boat I am in. :hmm:
Something for me to think about...

Perhaps someone out there with some serious modding skills could dvelop a "package" that we could download to simulate a type IIB and IIC... ofcourse they would be based on the IIA or IID, but their "specs" could be changed to rflect a real-life IIB/C.
P.S. What would be a great place to download add-ons for my ype II's? I've looked and cannot find any links for type II's but they are abundant for type VII and IX's. (seems like no one shows the II's any love :damn: ) I'm looking for things like various camo skins and other additions...

You also need to take the reported % of fuel with a pinch of salt.
I was in a IIA and was just short of the Kiel inbound point when my crew reported that we were out of fuel. The navigator reported that we could make it another 190 kms or so and rather than 'Esc' ing back to Kiel, I managed to get all the way back to the dock at 6kts. Listen to the navigator rather than the reported % of fuel.

Ive got a Camo skin here for the type II. It is for GWX 2.0 only though. Lutzow has also got a skin vault with a few type IIs in it.
EDIT: come to think of it, it would proberbly work with any other Mod and perhaps even stock SH3. I havnt tested it on those though.

I found a good way to stretch the fuel was to travel underwater whenever possible. Then, go slow when coming to the surface. Stretched my range considerably...

Yep, the game got it wrong. In real life that would shorten your range, not extend it.
