Well, I've tried this twice and got sunk both times. Once during daylight and once at night. 1, maybe I'm doing something wrong, or 2, it's "Mission Impossible".` Now I'm on try number three and, I've read everybodys comments, read the photo recon missions how to, and guess what - I target every ship in Yokohama and the camera button never activates. I'm within 5000 yards and get, at least, yellow triangle and still no joy.

Hey, got this out of the Subsim's SH4 guide, under the "how to complete a mission" heading, tells you how to complete a photo recon mission:
Photo.
You must travel to within 8 nautical miles of the objective then, while submerged, lock an enemy vessel in your periscope and press the menu bar button to take a photo. You may need a number of photos to complete the mission. You usually get 300 renown points for this mission.
Glance over the guide before your next patrol, on the following thread, its sort of like the game manual that should've came with the game! Tells you all kinds of helpful stuff I've found.

Hope this helps!

You just have to sneak in, nice and quiet. Night is best, I'll wait somewhere until after dark. My only issue was trying to figure out how to get the camera to work. Once I searched the answer here, it's been fine. Work your way following the deeper pockets and avoid any contact. Sit dead still for hours if you must.
If your playing the stock game. Be very careful of the Akizuki class destroyers. They can detect you while stopped and on "running silent" at atleast 800 yards. I know, I've had it happen to me. I was on "running silent" and had stopped engines while he was still a distance away. He came puttering along and at about 800-900 yards, his engine noise increases rapidly, and he starts pinging. Now, I know I am screwed. I'm at a depth of 230 feet and about 20 feet beneath the keel. I can't dive cause at this point of the approach, it's only getting shallower and I have no speed to maneuver. The Akizuki drops a perfect dc pattern, and its game over.
I usually play dead is dead, but this instance irritated me to no end. Reloaded. Sunk. Reloaded. Sunk. Always the Akizuki! Avoiding the other destroyers were not a problem, but it was always an Akizuki that nailed me. Finally, I went in during daylight, you can see further and don't have to get near as close during nighttime. Took my pic from 7,000+ yards and slunk away happy to have survived.
If your wondering why I kept trying, my target was a carrier, with another one camped about 1,000 yards from the first. Greedy ole me kept trying to get into an attack position to take my picture and the launch torps.

ya missions like these could be very suicidal .. need to play with caution. abandoned my last career in a photo recon mission on Hiroshima.. sneaked in under moon..sunk carrier Shokaku in the harbor...so afraid of daylight so I try to rush out the harbor before sunrise...surfaced and all ahead flank...then got blown to mars by the devastating coastal defense...:ping: (was trying to mimic das boot's gibraltar escape there )...gotta take my chance stay submerged next time.. :damn:

What a great sim this is! One issue I have similar to the Yokohama scenario is getting anywhere near Hiroshima let alone halfway through the inlet. I have carefully charted the depth and distances as I go but even in the deeper troughs when sitting on the bottom all-stop / rigged-for-silent / I still get dc'd. Now, maybe it's just me being all Hollywood but I figure in this situation the destroyer should not "see" me with that era's technology as I would be seen as ocean geography. Any ideas? The other odd thing I noticed is that ALL 4 destroyers leave the convoy for hours and hours trying to find and dc my boat. This seems counter to most tactical doctrine--if there were two subs the convoy would be completely exposed. ANYWAY, I would like to complete the photo op but am very frustrated. Just hate to blow it off even though it is 300+/- points. Any ideas on the Hiroshima leg would be helpful.

I had a photo recon mission for Hiroshima and could not get the camera to work.
After I dropped off an agent I received orders to do a photo recon of Hiroshima. After I reached the photo icon and locked on ships with my scope, the camera icon on the menu bar would not light up! No matter what shipped I locked on - close, far, docked, anchored or underway! Finally I just gave up and have started my way back to Pearl.
I have done photo recon once before and was able to complete the mission but I could not figure out this one at all.

Hiroshima is a breeze if you plot 10km radius circles from land. Mark that as a no-go zone. Unless it's the only way, of course.I prefer a daytime approach. Never get closer than 8km from land unless submerged. Once you peak around and no ships are there, surface and radar-on. Do a few sweeps. If you're in the clear, all ahead full. Steer clear of enemy vessels and land (10km minimum) or submerge and stay at least 4km away.
The final stretch is a real killer with all the patrols. It can be done. I've been able to do it twice in the same patrol and I only reload from home base. This is using TM 1.6 I think (don't look at me like that! I haven't checked for updates in like months).
